first time mods
Hi
Im looking at upgrading my stock dodge, its a 1998.5 24valve cummings in a 3500 4x4 running a automatic tranny.
I did some looking around and found the Banks powerpack kit, but after doing some looking on some forums am starting to have some second thoughts!!
I live in Ireland and want to get the right combination together due to the fact that any problems I may come accross will be harder to resolve because of the distance etc.
After some research im leaning towards the Banks complete s/s exhaust system including the elbow from the turbo and a Edge Juice module with monitor.
Im looking for an increase in power that is selectable without loosing reliability and id rather pay a bit more for quality and peace of mind.
The truck does no towing at all, (a waste i know
) and is my daily driver. Im just looking for some more boogy to get the blood pumping......
Is this a good combination and what results would I be likely to see?
What would be the next best bang for buck?
How much can I put through the stock tranny before I need to look at modifying it (keeping in mind I dont do any towing)?
I look forward to any words of wisdom or experience
Cheers in advance

Welcome Grant. As you will read on these forums, the auto in our trucks is pretty weak. With much of any upgrades you should get at least an upgraded valve body and Torque converter for your tranny. An Edge EZ comp without tapping the wire and 50-80 hp increase injectors would give you a little go for the buck without harming the auto. Also on your other post your having a surging problem. This could be a number of things from a bad TC to bad ground wires (battery grounds, engine to frame, etc) Do a search and you should find a lot of good info. I have a surge at the same speeds (transmission is not hunting gears), have changed and checked everything I can with no success.
Well good luck.

JMO (and i don't know if there is any difference in truck in Ireland vs. the states) but I say bang for your buck; get a decent drop in air filter, lose any restrictions in the stock exhaust, get some gauges, torque converter, shift kit it and finally a Smarty. You feel that extra bit of boogy that you've been looking for and not break the bank. Again that's just my opinion.

Cheers for the advice.
I will be ordering it all through the states in one hit if possible.
So do you think the edge juice is a good choice combined with the Banks exhaust and elbow? and should i also upgrade the injectors?
What kind of numbers should I expect with and without?
How bad are these transmissions at the end of day, what kind of cost to upgrade the tourqe converter and shift kit it....do i really need both?
Your opinions are priceless so thanks again for taking the time!!!

if you go with the juice and tap the wire you will have to put in a pusher pump to get your fuel pressure up, if not a 1200.00 injection pump will be in the works. The juice is good because you get adj power and all the gauges, As far as the banks exhaust, im sure it is good but way over priced, their are better deals out there. If you go to ebay and look in the stores section for gofastengineering, they have great prices on edge products and are great to deal with. If you contact them im sure they can put a package together for you and ship out. Heres a link to them.

Could you please explain more on the pusher pump and who sells them, any idea on price?

A pusher pump is just a term used to discribe the addition of another fuel pump. Kits are available on the market, BD makes one. I made my own using a Holley Blue with the stock Carter lift pump.
First order of business is to install gauges, weather you go with the intergrated gauges / fueling box or stand alone analog gauges. I like analog so if something where to go bad it wouldn't be much of a problem to replace one gauge.
Depending on how much HP you want will set the course of what to do next...
A little boogy can turn into an all out mosh pit!!!!

Its just what mikeD said, i have a holley blue pump mounted on the frame between my stock lift pump and the tank, I have 25 psi at idle and 18 at WOT. I can put my juice on 5x5 and run it all day long without a problem. There a lot of vendors that sella kit to do this or you can do it yourself and save a crap load of money,i did mine for under 75.00. Vulcan sells a kit to relocate your stock lift pump to the frame to make it more efficient(turns it into a pusher instead of a puller pump). Bd Diesel makes a nice kit that either relocates the stocker or you can add it to the stocker to be a pusher. Heres a link to them:

I think the juice is a good bang for the buck with its guages and features. If you go this route you can leave the pump wire untapped and it will only add 60 hp- then twice that when the wire is tapped. But analog guages and a smarty along with a fuel system upgrade, a bhaf (do a search), and a straight pipe would be a great start too. Then do the tranny upgrades mentioned. Call a local tranny shop to get the idea on prices there.
OK, heres my thoughts to date.
These are the items that I think will be a good combination, there a good base and " IF " I decide to do more to the truck in the future I will be able to retain these mods......I hope
(thats where your thoughts come into it)
I realise its not the cheapest options but considering that I have to ship it all over here id rather pay a little more and buy with confidence.
At this stage im going to leave the tranny because im not going all out....yet, and the truck only performs light dutys so im confident that it will survive (again your thoughts here.........)
So heres the list with prices.
Banks s/s exhaust sytem with elbow $800 us
Juice with Attitude monitor $720 us
Walbro pump kit with filter $395 us
Filter kit (intake) sourced locally
Total about 2k
Thoughts....................................
Is this a good solid / reliable combination and what gains are likely?

i would ditch the banks system and go with MBRP, or rip rooks exhaust systems for like $300-$400 depending on what you want, stainless steel will be more, but there all the same performance wise.
www.jegs.com has 4" stainless steel exhaust for under $500 and 4" aluminized steel for under $300 these are full exhaust systems.
i have the jegs aluminized steel 4"
just trying to save you a little, dieselfan.
Edge juice with attitude
Hello again
Well, I ordered in the edge juice ith attitude and fitted it the other weekend,
WOW....what a difference it made and its very easy to use.
I have some setup questions
How much boost can i crank out of it safely, I have it set at 30psi at the moment and im getting a pulsing noise from the turbo when I back off the gas (air backing up im guessing) is this going to hurt the turbo, can I boost it more safely
Also what is a safe level to set the EGT alarm at?
Cheers
