Exhaust Upgrades
Exhaust Upgrades
999 Dodge Ram 2500, I have had tranny rebuilt with upgraded parts (heavy duty bands, billet torque converter, etc), FASS Fuel Lift Pump, replacement fuel injector pump (original lift pump lost pressure and took out injector pump), and edge juice with attitude. I pull a 11K fifth wheel on a normal basis. I am looking to gain a couple MPG while towing. A few years back the muffler got a hole in it and I replaced from the resonator back with a 4" dynomaxx pipe and muffler. I am wondering if replacing the stock from the turbo to the muffler (and including the resonator) will make a difference with he MPG.
If so what are the pro/cons of replacing/not using a resonator?
And a local muffler shop can take me from stock to the resonator (if i replace it) or to the muffler in 4" piping for less than $100 (resonator would be extra $$), however he said they would go from stock to 4" about 6" to 1 foot down on the down pipe (they would use existing pipe from the turbo to where the 4" would start). Would that hurt the upgrade or should I spend what looks like around $150-$200 for a total 4" downpipe.
Also on another note would it help/be worth it to replace the factory Air intake box and filter or does it allow ample air flow to the engine?
I am on a tight budget so I don't want to spend the money unless it will be worth it to gain the MPG.
Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Probably not a big difference on MPG.
I'd just get a 4" MBRP down pipe if you need it, it will help lower egt's, basically its main contribution.
As for an air box, I'd forego the expense and get a BHAF from NAPA and put it on the factory elbow going to the turbo. Its part #2790 and gives you a huge airflow advantage over the stock oval hole. You may also want to get the heatshield pattern off this site and bend it up so you keep it cool and shielded from the turbo. Its really easy to do, I used a scrap piece of aluminum sheet I had laying around.
IIRC the BHAF was around $50 and has been on my truck since 07. I drilled a hole in the top and mounted the restriction gauge off the stock airbox and it hasn't moved, so it was worth the money to not replace the stock air filter twice a year.
