Edge Comp and SSssssmoke....???
OK, this is buggin' me, and I can't seem to get any answers, so let's try another angle of attack...

Those of you with an added Comp *only* - no other mods, at about what Comp level do you start seeing significant smoke from your exhaust?

With my original, I could easily run 3x3, and see only a moderate amount of smoke at take off from a stop and thru the gears - and incrementally higher as the Comp setting went higher. But that original one had occasional defects that I *thought* didn't affect it's "normal" operation, and Edge replaced it with a new one, no questions asked.

The new one smokes about the same on 1x2 as the old one did on 3x3, and can REALLY put out a decent cloud from there on up the scale!

Edge claimed only minor program upgrades since my original year-old Comp was made - so I'm at a loss to know if the difference in mine is due to those changes, or because the original one was sicker than I thought - but even at that, I got the dyno numbers shown in my sig with the original one...

Can any of you other 24 valvers out there give me your visual impressions of smoke levels with your Comps at varying settings?

Re:Edge Comp and SSssssmoke....???
Mine doesn't smoke much only when you are in third at low speed then give her the onion. I have only ran it on 5x5 so I have no clue what it does on the other settings.
Scooter
Re:Edge Comp and SSssssmoke....???
Had to pull my injectors for a little testing, so that now all I have is my COMP, and there is hadly ANY somke. Even with the box on 5x5, and me flooring it from a dead stop.

Tell you what I'll do though. Send me your box unit, and I'll send you mine. Well see if it's your box, or mine, or....??? .

But in EZ mode, it smokes pretty good.
Well, keep me in mind when you hitch up the pump wire (wonder jow long you plan to wait?), and let me know what you find - mine seems quite progressive up thru the settings - just kicks in MUCH earlier than the first one, and apparently lots more fuel in the upper levels. I could tell REAL quick with the trailer in tow, but that's a lot of work - really hoping for a few comparisons from others here with similar truck setups...
Re:Edge Comp and SSssssmoke....???
When I have my box turned on and the EDM stage 2's on level one I get hardly any smoke at all when its on 5 though look out! I have a box about 1.5 years old so whatever program is in there is what I have.

Re:Edge Comp and SSssssmoke....???
HMMmmm - I have absolutely no problem with this thread being moved - and maybe there will be better exposure in this section - but the reason I placed it in the 24 valve engine and drivetrain section is, it IS specific to 24 valve engines ONLY - does not apply to 12 valve, or any of the older stuff THIS section also involves...
Only reason I bring it up for clarification, is so I know better what parameters are used in determining the appropriate spot for questions like this? Is it that only STOCK engine/drivetrain issues and components are allowed there, and ANY aftermarket stuff or discussions - even those SPECIFIC to the 24 valvers, MUST be discussed in the broader based aftermarket area?
Thanks. ;D ;D

Re:Edge Comp and SSssssmoke....???
As I understand it the EZ is the same as the Comp on the first three settings. So this may have some info. I installed the EZ on the stock motor and got a fairly good amount of smoke at shift points. Next I installed the RV275's adjusted the valves (one intake abt .0004 open) and this gave it a heavy smoke at shift points, I worried that I might have to come down on the setting of the EZ for my commercial use. Next I installed a new map sensor and the smoke went down considerabley. Now with the 275's and the EZ on the most agressive setting, I can ease off with no or little smoke, there does not seem to be any smoke (in the mirrors) on pull once spooled. If I agressively wind through the gears there is a strong belch of smoke at shift points but I can ease off at the scales without getting too much attention. I am totally satisfied with the smoke situation. It looks like the MAP sensor can have an effect on the smoke emitted.

My main curiosity and concern is that I haven't traded ONE defective Comp for another - but really, I think the new one is operating more like the first one should have under the same conditions, plus, there may be a few upgrades and programming enhancements in the latest versions.

I find that with the new Comp, my EGT seems to jump up higher, and fuel pressure will now drop nearly to 12 PSI under load, where it would only drop to about 15 PSI before - and THAT was on 5x5 towing up in the Sierra... But so far, I am basing all my "tests" empty, on runs into town and back - so not really conclusive. What this Comp will do when again towing up in the grades will tell the story - but that might be a while off - meanwhile, I'm just trying to get as many comparisons as possible - sure wish there was another Dyno Day scheduled soon in the Sacramento area - I'm betting my power will be up noticeably with the new Comp...

That is incorrect if your refering to the "Levels I, II, II", it only equals the EZ in Level I. Now if your refering to the SubLevels then that might be a lil bit closer to believe.

Just kidding.

Stake, very valid point. I have a much older version of the box, and thought it might give some feedback that he was looking for.

Why would they reflash with the same version?
Dunno - maybe changes were considered too few or small to update the version level - and maybe they didn't wanna mess with a whole bunch of guys wanting/demanding theirs "upgraded" at little or no cost...
ANOTHER point I might make is, I can't be sure that my 5x5 smoke is any thicker than with the old Comp - it always WAS quite obvious at that level even with the old one - but I'm now getting heavier smoke even down on the very LOW levels where I did not before - Edge MIGHT have simply lowered the power levels further down the scale, but left the maximum the same??????
