DTT TRANNY FREAKING OUT!!!!

I had a real weird experience with my DTT tranny and was hoping someone could help me out with it....

I was on my way from Dallas to Houston, Running 21-2200 rpm's in D not OD for 40 miles and When I exited the freeway my truck would not go into first gear. First gear was literally like PARK. It would take off in second but not first and if I put it in first it would lock up.

Guage shows that the temps were low...

Fluid is very pretty and at proper level...

After idling for 2 or 3 minutes in neutral the truck would then take off in first

But when it shifted to second it was pretty rough and after driving back to Dallas it did the same thing...

Idle for awhile in neutral and it will go in first.

Lucky for me when I took off from a redlight after exiting the freeway and it was in second gear (D position) and I shifted it down to first I was barely moving because it was like throwing it in PARK!!!

Re:DTT TRANNY FREAKING OUT!!!!

I just talked to BILL!!!!

My DTT Tranny went into LIMP MODE and it is an EZ adjustment.

Everything my truck did is "classic" as to what they will do in LIMP MODE pertaining to the tranny.

I just have to adjust the Voltage regulator for the tranny down .2 volts approx.

BTW... Bill is a heck of a nice guy!!!

Thanks for reminding me to call him Jamie, I was going to do it Monday but decided to give it a try on the off chance I would catch him today!

Re:DTT TRANNY FREAKING OUT!!!!

Nothing new here James....remember with the voltage your lying to the PCM by telling it something different than is happening, if you ever have that problem just pull over and shut it off then start it back up....resets the computor, also look were your voltage regulator is by the PCM as a guess....hot with Twins there....move it over to the fender away from the PCM and away from all that heat.

Re:DTT TRANNY FREAKING OUT!!!!

Total learning curve today...
When it happened I had no idea of Limp Mode for the tranny,
Never Shut it off,
And your idea about moving it is making a heck of alot of sense!!!

Thanks Jim I will do that in short order...

Re:DTT TRANNY FREAKING OUT!!!!

Hey Jim,
Pulled the tranny out begining of this week.

I stripped the hub out. ??? I coulda swore I snapped it the way it let go on a locked shift.

I got it back together, and within' 1/2 tank fuel,, cracked the Transfer Case.

BTW, my truck also went in limp mode the other day,, but didn't "bind up" when pulled to manual low. I did what Jim said,, Shut the truck off, and re-started. Mine went in "limp mode" at 1,400RPM, decelerating Locked TCC. I felt the truck come out of lock-up, even though I had my mystery switch in the "Mysterized" position (locked). BTW, OD wouldn't work either.

Not knowing Limp Mode exsisted I got pretty lucky that I was doing 5mph or less when I pulled it into low... The back tires locked up and I thought my daughter and I were heading for the windshield... Thank God for Seatbelts

Re:DTT TRANNY FREAKING OUT!!!!

Why would limp mode cause 1st gear to bind up?

Re:DTT TRANNY FREAKING OUT!!!!

Larry,
I gotta plead ignorance (which isn't hard for me ) I was just so glad to hear it was a normal thing for the DTT if certain things weren't right and my tranny wasn't screwed up. I got the info on how to adjust it and never even asked the why's and how's of it all.
Good question and now I would like the answer so I will be glad to hear the Pro's chime in on this.

Why would limp mode cause 1st gear to bind up?
[/quote]

I'm going to assume, that when the tranny is in limp mode,, 3rd gear is always applied, and the way it appears the tranny works,, you could engage 2nd gear while 3rd is applied and not cause any "bind-up" so to speak, but if you apply 1st and 3rd gear,, it looks like the trans would be stuck. Maybe I'm not thinking right, but that is what it appears to be,, be forwarned, I do not know the fluid routing, or gear direction, I only looked at the clutches, and planetaries.

Notatrannyguru,
Merrick Cummings Jr

BTW,, I think 3rd gear is also applied in Reverse.
For a side note. 3rd gear is only 70% as strong as the TCC, so at High HP, you can slip 3rd gear before the TC.

Re:DTT TRANNY FREAKING OUT!!!!

Yep I guess it was third it was taking off in...That's why I pulled it down into low... SCREEECH

I pulled into a parking spot ASAP and realized I might not have reverse now (sinking feeling in gut) so I put it in Reverse and it worked. Checked first again and it was like having another Park. OD seemed to work fine also...

I stripped the hub out

Same thing that happened to mine, stock stuff can only handle so much I guess, that billet one is a nice piece with a totally different design.
