Ive been looking at replacing the LSD on my rear axle since the clutches are all worn out. No matter which wheel slips its not transferring power. Also makes me wonder how much of a hit it is to fuel economy. Mine is miserable =(
Id like to get something durable like a detroit but I hear they tend to drag a bit in turns and eat tires over time.
Im looking for something thats dual wheel drive and slips when wheels spin at different rates. Would rather not get an air locker or such, I dont offroad at all with this.

 

If it were me
I'd just replace the clutches and run with it.
If all it sees is the street the expense of a compete diff isnt justified

as far as the MPGs the LSD wont effect your mileage unless your burnin your tires every where you go

 

Ill ask the driveline shop about his estimate for repacking it, but it looks like something I can manage if I can rent a case spreader tool. Heck I can probably make one Ive got a bunch of hefty steel bar stock and some allthread lying around. Anyone do this before and run into anything bad?
If I recall I asked the shop owner before and he said it wasnt worthwhile to repack an OEM one. better to upgrade. Might be out of context though, memory isnt so good.

 

I made a case spreader for the d44 in my old F-150. I'd keep some clamps on it to keep it from popping out, since the pin holes aren't all that deep.

If I burn out my diff, I'd look at going to something like a Detroit tru-trac, clutchless LSD. ARB's are nice, but tough to justify for a street driven truck.

It should only be about 3-4 hours of labor and not more than $250 into parts

 

I suggested detroit tru-trac as well since that looked like the best compromise for the driving I do, but hes pushing the full on detroit locker which is probably pretty harsh for what I do. He runs a pull truck and a drag truck in competition for his shop so I think hes just trying to suggest somethign bulletproof. Im hoping to hit 600hp in the next year or so with twins and a built pump but thats gonna be as far as I go.
Anyone recently install a detroit locker and if so how is tire wear and cornering on street? I just worry about the rear end making me over / understeer in a bad corner by unlocking at the wrong time, etc.
I think Id be happier with a LSD rather than a locker since I dont use the truck offroad much at all. Just hauling stuff down fire roads on occasion. The rest is all street with lots of turns.

 

Isn't the 95, 2500, automatic differential a Dana 70... with a Pwr-Lok LSD?
If so, you won't need a spreader. Only needed on the Dana 80's.

The case spreader is required to set the proper pre-load on the carrier bearings.

 

I thought the rear axles on these trucks were dana 80? Ive got the heavy front axle with towing package and 4.10's.

the Autos came with D70s and Most of the Manuals came with D80s
my 01 HO NV5600 came with the 80
Im sure somebody who knows more history will chime in

 

Depends how worn the bearings are. My D44, I needed a spreader to get the old carrier out. I bought a D61 years ago, the carrier fell out of it. I don't like the thought of beating on the bearings to get the carrier to go in, so a spreader is always a good idea. IIRC, 0.020" is the max to spread the casings.

 

Anyone with a detroit locker that can comment on its road manners?

Looks like youve got some serious ponies under the hood there too. Thats good, one thing I was worried about was whether the tru-trac can take that sort of abuse.
I think the detroit locker is prob overkill for me, the tru-track sounds better suited for what im doing

 

Tru-Loc is the one that works as a LSD on the hwy....right? Japanese? Not cheap...right?
