Dana 80 Mag-Hytec fitment (O-ring sealing)?
Dana 80 Mag-Hytec fitment (O-ring sealing)?
Got my Mag-Hytec rear diff. cover yesterday. Why did it come in a box that said "fragile"??
Ok, the real question. The instructions said that some Dana housings will have things stamped (a letter or number) in them that I "might" have to take care of with JB-weld or permatex black or else the O-ring won't seal. It also said that "some" Dana housings have the holes machined off-center on one side, and that I would have to put a thin film of permatex on the "off-center" side to get the O-ring to seal.
How many people that have put on Mag-Hytecs have had to do any of the above fixes to get the O-ring to seal?
BTW,
That thing is a nice piece in my opinion. Drain hole, dipstick with magnet, port for hooking up temp sender. Nice machine work etc. etc. I can't wait until I have time to install it.

Out back on the 80 I had a letter stamped into the mounting surface. It was not very deep. You could barely feel it with the end of your finger and I really did not think that it would cause any problems at all, but I performed the recommend fix. I have had zero problems.
I had numbers stamped on the mating face of the housing. I used a Permatex on the numbers, waited for the stuff to semi-cure, then bolted on the cover. It's not a problem. Just don't forget to jack up either side of the rear to drain out the axle tubes or you'll be mixing old lube with your brand new stuff you put in.
Put one on my truck with no additive to the sealing surface, no problems.
Took the one off my sons truck to change the oil, used the same o-ring going back, no problems with no additional sealant.

Thanks for the replies guys. Didn't figure I would have any trouble with it, just wondered how common the issues were. Already have the permatex in the garage, keep it right next to the duct tape and the phone with 911 on speed dial.

How about some pictures in your gallery??
You have the only other Lt. Almond I've run into...would like to see one with a DOR on it (I almost went that route). Seen lots of Driftwoods...no other Lt Almond's.

I've had my mag-hytec dana 70 cover on for a couple of weeks & noticed a oil spot on my shop floor about the size of a nickle. I took a file & tried to smooth out the stamp marks in my housing, but I guess I didn't do it good enough. Looks like I'll be pulling the cover this weekend & resealing it useing some permatex.
I haven't had mine apart yet or looked real close for stamp marks yet. Not sure where you filed tankeryanker, as I assumed that the stamped marks were on the mating surface of the housing. I didn't think there would be anything to file if the cover was on.
The directions said to fill the stamping up with JB Weld and then file down flush with the rest of the mating surface. If you use Permatex (which is what I plan to use if I have to), I assume you can just put some in the stamping, let it cure for a while and then place the cover on.
I plan on taking pictures of the install to post here for future reference. If there are stamping marks, I will be sure to get a good shot of those.

I am curious as to why you removed the cover if you were just changing fluid. If you were inspecting gears or something I would under stand, but I thought the purpose of the drain plug was to simplify the fluid draining process.
