Dana 80, backlash and building for strength

well i have an extreme amount of backlash in my rear end, its moving alot. no gauge to meausre it, but its more than it should be im sure.

is this something i can easily fix by having the gears reset with shims or whatever, or am i looking at a complete overhaul (which means ARB since im gonna be pulling with it)

ive never done anything related to the diffs and/or gear set up so this is something im gonna be getting done by a professional.

Im gonna go out now and pull the cover and see if there is alot of metal shavings or anything in there...but its def not right.

It usually requires at a minimum a dial indicator and the know how (of which I have neither). I would think you could shim it to a degree. Talk to Scott (scottsjeeprolet), he sets up rearends in his Jeeps and stuff, he may be able to help you out with it. Was out his place this week fixing my trans (gov press soledoid and transducer).

It depends if the bearings have slop in them. If theres any play in the carrier or the pinion you wont. I just redid mine there was some play in the carrier and lots in the pinion. It aint cheap either. If theres no play i would say you can reshim it to compensate for the gear teeth wear.

If you're going to be reshimming your rearend, invest in a set of dummy bearings. Larger ID so they slip on and off the carrier for doing the setup. And if you're going through all this work, may as well through the ARB in. If your pinion is still tight, you just need to set the backlash and go.

There is no "reshiming" a rearend.

Listed BL specs are for new gears.

A worn gearset requires a unique setup. Throw specs out the window and go from there.

If there is no play in the diff bearings....leave it alone. You will do more harm than good by "reshiming" it.

If you have play in the bearings, the gear set needs to be replaced unless you want a ghetto job.

thanks CC, ill be inspecting it soon to check the bearings and the other internals. right now im having an issue that i found with the output shaft at the t-case that im getting alot of noise and vibration from.

if it comes down to getting a new gearset and bearings then ill be saving my pennies to do the ARB at the same time.
