CB radios

I would like to get into these but don't know much about them. I basically just want it for fun and to do a little highway "communicaiton" but thats really all. What kind of setup should i be looking at. I hear the galaxys are the best, but i think they are a bit out of my price range. A friend of mine recommends i get either a ranger or a cobra. But theres so many different models and options and i have NO idea what i need and/or why. The same goes for antennas, i don't mind having a 10 foot antenna but do i need it for what i want. Or could i use a big magnet one and put it on only when i plan on doing some long haul type drivin

I just use mine for quick traffic updates and "bear" reports! I picked up a Uniden (Bearcat) at Walmart for like $79. Works great for my need. Checkout the firestik website for antenna's and a whole pile of information! I did run w/ a magetic one for a bit, but I prefer the dodge/firestik mount. It works great!

I agree with TPilaske, that would be the way to go since your first startin out. You could run a good set-up for cheap. Firestik has the antennas and the mounts you need. Plus they have great info about gettin started. A cheap radio with nice antennas will have a better single and range than an expensive radio with cheap antennas.

I use a Wilson 1000 magnet Mount as far as antennas and put it on the center of your cab to receive and transmit at it's optimum performance. And for a cheap but effective CB Uniden makes descent radio for the money. I have had Cobra's most of the time Galaxy ,Midland ,Super star, Ranger, And I now use a Wilson 1000 mag base and super star 3000 now with no problems. Check out www.CBRELECTRONICS.COM thats were I got my radio and Wilson antenna. Good luck PS. never coil the unused coax under your seat it will rays your SWR "standing wave ratio"zig zag it and make sure the rails for seat don't rub it. leaving you with a very low SWR if you use the wilson 1000 about 1-1 on all the chanels.

I've always ran Cobras and never had any problems. I'm currently running a Wilson Super Trucker and love it. In the past I've ran the K-40, but I think I like the Wilson better. Got a picture of my Cobra in my Gallery.

I have a Connex radio, very similar to a Galaxy, and I and running a 8 foot steel whip antenna on the bumper of my truck. I don't talk on my radio much, but it's better than a radar detector when it comes to cops. I think those big rig drivers can spot a trooper from 5 miles away. One thing about those steel whip antenna is that they pick up everything, so you really have to squelch the radio down.

I have a Magnum 257 it was very expensive and would only recomend it if you get a good deal on it. I have it hooked up to a Wilson antenna. I also have a Uniden 285D digital scanner thats hooked up to a firestik and a wilson scanner antennas.

I run a Galaxy and a Firestick antenna, have good TX & RX. Antenna is mounted between cab and toolbox, and standing wave is 1.2:1. Make sure you run 18' of coax, and coil it under the rear seat. If you look you can find some smokin deals on CBs and antennas.

I have a Uniden Grant XL with upper and lower sideband. On my old truck with dual K40's, I have talked as far away as Canada and most states east of the Mississippi. Definately more than you need, but a nice setup!

Looks like a decent radio, my Galaxy is only swinging aroung 20 watts so it ought to be a talker. Get a good antenna, and you should be in good shape. Remember not to skimp on coax, get good stuff.
