Brakes

My 99 Ram 2500 is a little short on the brakes when I come barreling down the Rockies pulling a trailer. Is there some kind of after-market pads or upgrades that will help?

Re:Brakes

Shift down, save the brakes for an emergency. After market pads will still heat up the discs and drums with ultimate brake fade or a fire.

You can install an exhaust brake at some expense.

Re:Brakes

If you have to ride the brakes coming down a mountain, you're going too fast... Downgear, exhaust brake, whatever but not with brakes.

Re:Brakes

Check out EGR Brakes - They have a real nice brake system.

Re:Brakes

Rob,

I know what you mean...and having a brake pad with a lifetime warranty does nothing to help stop a load. What you need is an upgraded brake system. The previous post gave you the addy of EGR brakes, he was correct in that they are a very wise choice. I went with them and have not once regreted the decission or spent money. They are simply awesome, the difference is hard to describe, but it is real and every time you step on the brake peddel, they remind you of what good brakes are suppose to feel like . If you have any questions feel free to ask. Good luck

Re:Brakes

Not starting down the grade to fast to begin with, shifting down and an exhaust brake should keep you out of trouble.

There is a fairly steep grade here on the central coast (3 miles of 7%) and using my exhaust brake with almost 16,000lbs behind me only used the brakes a couple of times. I have a lot more control and feel much safer with the exhaust brake!

IMHO As far as the EGR brakes they look really nice and I imagine they work really well. I would try to get both the EGR brakes and an exhaust brake. But if I could only afford either the brakes or the exhaust brake I would go with the exhaust brake first.

Good luck -

George
