Bought a 2000 CTD auto...My first 24v and first auto have questions...
Ok guys after selling my 97 CTD 5 speed about 3.5 years ago I FINALLY got another CTD, this time an auto and 24v. My first and main question is how can I tell if the tranny in this thing is un-modded? I know it is not a full aftermarket tranny but, I am having my doubts about it being completely stock too. I have driven more then a few stock autos in both 12v and 24v and this one shifts much more agressively and does not seem to have that lag that all the others I have driven (ie. from a stop every other one i have driven seem to rev for some time before actually picking up speed and some of the trucks I drove had only 50k mi. on them). This one has 115k mi. and when you hit the go pedal there is little to no lag at all and it shifts very very firm compared to the others. The engine itself I assume is stock as i have yet to be able to find a box on it, only thing it could possibly have is injectors and I doubt it. the intake is stock with exception of a drop in K&N someone put in it and the exhaust is factory but the kitty is MIA and no muffler. Has no gauges on it either. I bought the truck off a friend who rebuilds wrecks and that is what this truck is (rebuilt wreck) so never got to talk to the owner of the truck. I figure the truck has been pulled with b/c of the 5th wheel and brake box. All in all I am pleased with my purchase especially at the low price it came at. I just wondered if there is any way to tell for sure if the tranny has any mods....I guess I can just start modding and see if it starts slipping but i hope there is a better way.
I will say one thing about these trannys...they are not as bad as many make them out to be. Mine is in the shop getting a bunch of goodies put in it, even though it was still running ok with the mods in my sig for about a year. The TC had started slipping during lockup and the 2-3 shift would act funny at times. I figured I'd be proactive and throw some heavy duty stuff in there (Goerend TC and parts).
My tranny guy ended up having to replace a bunch of hard parts because of wear but hey, it was still running and it's his opinion that it's the original tranny with almost 290k miles
. That's not too bad in my opinion. Of course, someone could have put a used trans in there at some point. Basically, for about a year and a half I've been trying to kill this trans before upgrading, but I guess I wasn't rough enough on it.
As far as telling if it's been modded, I don't really know. I have heard that most aftermarket TC's have a drain plug on them. I know my new Goerend TC did.

Thanks for the info man, I appreciate it. I just know that all of the other factory autos I have driven have felt much more laggy and did not shift nearly as firm. Anyone else know of anything I can look for to tell whether stock or not?
Even if it is only a TC upgrade that would still be sweet...Although my luck is never that good....LOL...But it does not lag and shifts nice and firm, the truck has been pulled with too, not sure what but it does have trailer brakes and a gooseneck hitch so with 115k on the truck it seems odd the stock auto would perform so well. Hopefully i got lucky
