BHAF Destroyed

I have had some problems with my boost system for the last few months that I could not figure out. Basically, whenever the truck needed lots of boost like when passing someone on a 2 lane road, the truck would lose power completely. I could not figure out the problem; I had checked the boots, turbo, MAP,etc. Well I changed my BHAF the other day at 35K miles (168K on truck), and as soon as I saw the inside, I knew I had discovered the problem. The truck runs much better now.

This filter was 10 months old / 35K miles; my “boost problems” first occurred at about 4 months into the filter. Note how the inside of the filter is separated….man these trucks can suck some air! This filter had the outerwears and washed it about every 6 months, but I never checked the inside of the filter when pulling it off for the oil changes.

This was a NAPA 2970 filter...Check your filters regularly!

Dang it! Now i gotta go out and check my filter.
So did your filter minder show it was clogged. I drilled the end of my filter and installed the factory filter minder.

Thats the system for a 3rd gen...Sorry I was too lazy to find the 2nd gen one, but its an actual CAI system. Drawback is that they are expensive and you have to cut a hole or so I've heard, BUT you never have to buy a new filter. I'm cheap and lazy so I go with the 29$ Napa 6637 every 10k miles

I don't understand why so many people continue to run the BHAF. for $20 more you can get a filter that flows better and is re-usable!

I love my drop in K&N.
I know some do not. It will not do that or need replacing.

Do tell. Which filter do you speak of? My BHAF cost me $38 at NAPA.
Actually took off the K&N fipk and put on my BHAF.
K&N's are bad on our trucks. Turbo's suck the oil right out of them and it coats the turbo blades and that causes them to collect dust.

I think the last 4" inlet AFE I bought was about $67? still cheaper than two BHAF's... flows better, sounds better, reusable, etc.

The BHAF had a outerwears on it; the filter should not have been exposed to water other than normal driving conditions. I first noticed my “boost problem” or lack of air intake about 3 months into the filter or roughly 12,000 miles; the problem got progressively worse to the point where the filter should have been changed at about 18,000miles, but I did not investigate the filter because I knew it was probably only at about 50% lifespan. My first to filters lasted 40K easily, only changed as a precaution.

We change our OTR Heavy Haul truck filters at 300 hours; I will begin doing the same as the $50 preventative maintenance is well worth eliminating the truck depression I have gone through over the last 6 months (not to mention I almost spent a grand on a new turbo!). Remember the fundamentals when investigating any problems! I will continue using the BHAF, but more cautiously; I just don’t like the oil in the other options.

Oh, and never put the filter minder on.

might want to check your turbo and see if any of your fins are nicked, because of your bad filter

just my opinion

Well when i get home, I'll be changing out my BHAF for an AEM Dryflow filter here....
http://www.aempower.com/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=250
Or possibly the deep pleat one P/N: 21-3059DK.
The BHAF has been on there for almost 50k now, so it's time anyway.
