A better VP44?

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum (actually it's my 1st post to it but I've been lurking on & off for some time now). Seems to me a great deal of knowledge is on tap here. Anyway, I have a stock '01 Reg. cab long bed truck with a 5-speed and a serious case of Dead Pedal Syndrome for about the past year or so. I've finally gotten fed up enough to where something has to be done about it, so i'm planning on getting rid of the stock lift pump in favor of a 95gph F.A.S.S. system & replacing the VP44. Like most other people, I wouldn't want to experience the same trouble again so I was looking for a better VP44 when I stumbled upon Blue Chip Diesel's website & read up on what they had to offer:

http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/VP44INFO.html

I was wondering if anybody here had experience with this product and if it is a legitimate enough improvement to justify the extra $$$? What kind of hp/torque gains could the aforementioned combination support? Also, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. In case it matters, I do plan on doing some performace mods to the truck once the dead pedal issue is ironed out. One more question--what order should my engine/drivetrain mods come in, in order to compliment each other & get the most satisfaction from my truck? I'm sure I've seen the list before but don't remember where...

Welcome to DTR!

Before dooming your VP right away, check your codes. Turn the key on-off-on-off-on, and they will display in the odometer. There is a section in the tech facts with all the descriptions for the codes, or just post them here. You may just have a bad APPS, which is significantly cheaper than the VP. You could also try resetting the APPS (also in the tech facts), which may help your dead pedal.

As for Bluechips VP, IMO, they are overpriced as to what you get. One mine went out, most places were using the new updated electronics they talk about, as well as new housings. And they were much cheaper than bluechip. My HRVP was the same price as their special VP, uses the same electronics theirs does, new housings, like theirs. Unlike theirs, mine increased power. I'd save your money, and just find a regular reman for in the $1k range, as it will have the updated electronics and new housings anyway. Just ask them before you buy.

For your mod situation, start off with gauges first a foremost. Fuel press. and pyro are the important ones. Since you're a manual truck, fill the third hole with a boost gauge. After that, its really depends what you are doing with the truck. A box or tuner would probably be a good upgrade for you. I like the Smarty, but the Edge and TST both provide more power. After that, a set of injectors, turbo and clutch. Keep an eye on your fuel pressure, it'll tell you when you need an upgrade to the fuel system. If you go with a FASS right off the bat, you will be good 600+ hp.

It should.... ALL VP44 use the same electronics. The only reason it wouldn't is if they had old stock left they needed to go through before using the new.

Back a few years ago when i worked at a high performance diesel shop, we got all our VP's from them. I never had one come back on me (Granted i only worked there 2 years). I did about 30 or so...but i would not install one unless they did a FASS or at the very least a stock LP. I did talk to Kevin at MWFI and they said their pumps have all the updates they could put in them.....but we didn’t get into specifics back then either......

Heck...i have one going on 3 years in my rig if that makes you feel any better......

ALSO i believe Blue Chips changed their name......

To get back to what Tate was saying, this is the onslaught of codes my truck threw at me last night:

P PCU
P0500
P1694
P1693
Pdone
P ECU
P1693
P0216

From my readings in this forum so far, I have gathered the P0216 code does not look good for the VeryPricey44.

Another question--how will I KNOW I'm getting the better electronics & pump housing? I'm sure there's a few unscrupulous vendors out there that will tell you anything to make a quick buck...

isn't 1693 a crankshaft position sensor code. At least thats what mine was. My VP was only 900 when i replaced it. i guess it works out when you work at a shop that keeps 3 of these on hand every week.

I believe the Blue Chip web page is out of date. When the FedEx electronics became available Chip may have been one of the first to offer them and therefore used that as his marketing content on the website. My entire experience with him was first rate and back when I did mine a few years ago his price was right in line with the average. Now he is a little overpriced. The only negative is that he charges the full core up front. You will be shelling out $3000 until he receives your core.

I know about the full core; if I do go the Blue Chip route I've almost been tempted to do without my ride for a little while and send the bad pump to him up front with the $1600 for the new one. Who sells the HRVP44? I'd be interested in hearing about any other VP's you guys have had good experience with. I got a little time; waiting to get my wife's W-2 so I can finish our tax return before I move on this...

1693 is the companion code just saying that the ECM has a code on it...from what ive heard P0216 is the dreaded VP44 code that means the VP is gone...

Industrial Injection sells an HRVP, as well as Schieds, I think Haisley has one, Piers does too. If you're gonna spend $1600 on a pump, spend $150 more and get a little extra out of your pump with a HRVP. Not only that, II's core is $1000 less thab Blue Chip. Easier to take if they reject your core, or only give you a partial return.

I just put in an II HRVP on Sat.....core was only $400. It runs like a screaming banshee now.

As I know it P0216 is not the dreaded death code......its one of them but not THE reaper. I ran with P0216 for 8 months with no symptoms till it did crapout this Sat.

P1688 is a dead ringer for VP44 failure.

It amazes me how many talk about the dreaded P0216 code being the kiss of death to the Vp, which it is but many people run for quite some time with that code, however the real killer is the P1688 as soon as that code set there I set with a dead truck so to me the P0216 woulda been alot better at least if that code had popped up I most likely would have been able to make it home, but if you ask me neither are codes that would make me happy, no code is a good code

Purchase your pump from a reputable vendor. All pumps should now be rebuilt using the latest PGS (electronics), unless they had stock left over. The "FedEx" module has been surpassed with a newer better version. All pumps should come with some type of warranty, some will be better than others. Fully understand the warranty, none that I m aware of warranty the entire pump if the pump wire is pierced. Also don't think the stealth cover will keep the shops in the dark..... They will know if one has been used.
