Bad experience with Edge EZ
Bad experience with Edge EZ
Just wanted to relate my less than satisfactory experience with Edge.
I bought a used Edge EZ less than a year ago. I started getting low MAP sensor voltage codes and determined it was the EZ causing them. I sent it off to Edge and they confirmed that the EZ was bad. They also confirmed that the failure was not due to anything I could have done. I was prepared to pay a reasonable cost to have it repaired since it was out of warranty.
Unfortunately, the EZ I had was sealed in epoxy so could not be repaired. They say the newer ones are made differently and are now repairable. Edge offered me a new box for $356 or a "refurbished" one for $220 with a 6 month warranty.
The refurbished product is apparently a used unit they test to be sure it works. Considering I already owned a unit that worked and it failed in a little over 6 months I couldn't see the wisdom in buying this and going through the same hassle again, not to mention the $220.
Thus, my only option was to buy a new one for $356. Knowing they had already sold me one defective product I can't stomach spending this kind of money with the possibility of another failure down the road.
In my opinion, Edge sold a $500 product that cannot be repaired due to their choice of manufacturing procedures. That was their choice and they have since changed their process which indicates they know they had failure problems and that requiring customers to throw their defective units in the trash when a $10 circuit board goes bad is not good for business.
Therefore I would have expected to be sold a new unit at their cost. They claim their cost is actually higher than $356 and I am getting a deal. I have a hard time believing a computer chip and a couple of wires costs more than $50 so this doesn't ring true.
I've read a lot of positive comments about Edge on these forums so I may just be the unlucky exception or my expectations may not be reasonable.
Long story short, I'm buying a Smarty and Edge will never see a dime from me again. Sorry for the rant, but folks that are looking at buying a used Edge product should know what they might be getting into.

Its too bad you had this experience. I have never used an edge product, but what they do is nothing unusual...it happens every day. First, who did you buy the used unit from? Buying something used comes with some assumption of risk. Otherwise, nobody would ever buy new. Next, manufacturers change the design of products every day due to poor performance or other problems, and its called an "update". Even though they know the previous design had faults, they still charge you for the replacement.

Sucks you had a bad experience. But good for you voicing your displeasure and unsatisfactory response from the manufacturer.
I would guess you are in the minority being unsatified with Edge, but that doesn't ease the sting of their lack of support.
Smarty sounds like a cool product, little pricey if you ask me, but these things usually come down a bit in time. If you are looking for something comparable in price and HP to the EZ, you might consider a Van Aaken V-5. They can be had for about $360.00 new with a warranty and they seem to offer a good product and reputation.
You're not Dan Cooke the comic are you?

Edge is known for their outstanding customer service.
They sealed their original design in epoxy to keep the pirates from stealing their hard work.
They realized this wasn't a good idea for the very same reason you had to deal with, not repairable.
As this was a quite old EZ (obviously), they didn't owe you anything, any original warranty is long gone, and since you bought it used, who knows what it was previously exposed to.
They are doing you a favor by offering to sell you a new one at cost (yes, that's how much it costs them for parts, and research/development time and $$, at least) with full warranty, or a factory refurbished used one with 6 months warranty.
"They" didn't sell you a defective unit, "you" bought a 2nd hand defective unit from a 3rd person, maybe even a 4th person, not Edge.
"They" would never sell a defective unit.
Ask anyone who's purchased a new box and it happened to be bad, they will tell you how Edge jumped through hoops to make it right.
Sorry it happened to you, but you have to be realistic in your expectations.
No, I'm not affiliated with Edge, nor are they a site advertiser, so leave the "****" comments out.
Oh, normally we don't allow one sided company bashing, as we don't get to hear the other side, and that is a wee bit unfair.

Well first of all, I'm definitely not Dan Cooke the comic although it sounds like my posting may have made a few of you laugh with my high expectations.
I don't want to get in an argument with all the folks here defending Edge. As I said, I've seen lots of good posts about them and enjoyed their product. I wish them the best and can only say they lost a potentially loyal customer by refusing to negotiate.
In my line of work, you stand behind what you do and do what it takes to make your customers happy. I don't feel they did either in this case, but that is just my opinion.
