4:10s hurt performance??

I'm lookin at a truck with a 6 speed and 4:10 gears. I plan to run 33X14.50 super swampers is the 4:10s really gonna hurt my performance??

I won't drag race this truck at the track but just messin around street drvin.

I guess what I'm askin is, am I gonna get beat by a 6 speed 3:55 geared truck with the same mods and same tires (my buddies truck ) or a 5 speed 3:55 geared truck (2 of my other buddies trucks ).

I don't do much interstate drivin but I'd like to know if I wanted to hit the road I could cruise along at about 75 and it not be turnin like 2800k or somethin like that.

The only time you might lose is at higher speeds. Up to about 75 or so, you should be just fine.

4.10s vs. 3.54 are not, imo, a good enough reason to avoid a good truck or good deal, just like the 3.54s aren't worth paying a whole lot more for.

This is a very clean truck.

01 quad cab, white, full power tow package, 75k, the nice alloy wheels and good street tires, all factory (exhaust, CD player everything) not one dent or scratch in the whole truck. Wheel to wheel runnin boards and mud flaps (so the rockers ant dented or chiped).

It was an older man who had it (I think he was in his mid to late 50s) and pulled horses with.

They are askin 20,488 but they ant really wantin to give me much for my truck (pay off but I know it's worth more than pay off) but I'm tryin to work with them and see if they will go up on my trade in and maybe get the truck down to 20k before taxes then I could swing it.

I would put some 35's on it... my truck w/ 3.54 and 35's needs more gear or less tire... I'm going w/ 33's, but I would be interested to see how the truck feels w/ some more gear

Not to flame on ya here, but your concerns about 4:10s are only because you are worried about your buddies trucks beating you in a race? I love my 4:10s and my 6spd. I don't care if someone elses truck is faster than mine or not. Ask anyone on here who tows anything even remotely heavy, and they'll tell ya, 4:10s and the 6spd is the hot ticket. If you're worried about getting beat in a race, buy an auto and spend about a billion dollars on it, then you can go fast

If you were to run 35" tires the gear of choice would probably be 4.56. Remember numericaly higher is called lower gears and visa versa.
My Jeep has 36" swampers with 4.56, my bro inlaw had 40" w/ 5.38 gears.
With the higher gears and big tires your top end will be great but gettin there and the off the line will suffer greatly.
I know you might already know this but some people might not.

Thats true with a low torque gas engine, but with these torque monsters you really don't need to go so low on the gears. Just depends on how slow you want to crawl and how fast you want to go on the highway. I think that with 4.10's and 35" tires it would be geared about like 3.53's and stock size tires.

I have 4.10's with a 5 speed. It was terrible with the stock tires, shiftin all the time. A 6 spd would be worse, but I put on 315/75/16's, which comes to about 34.3 in. Now, its perfect, I bet its like stock tires with the 3.54's.

I think he is mainly worried about being faster than his buddes, not so much building a race truck. And some of us don't like autos, even if they are faster.

Yeah I'm not lookin to build a race truck, but I would like to beat them and it's not really about that.

I don't a truck that pull a 100ft oak tree, but won't go over 75 cause it bouncin of the rev limiter.

The swamper measure right at 33 inchs tall mounted on a 16.5X12 rim so I don't think that 1.3 inchs difference in a (315) will make a huge difference.

I think I'm gonna go back up there and look at the truck again saturday and see what I can do, it's just to nice to pass up.

I HATE 4:10's with a 5 or 6 speed. An automatic isnt too bad(.69 overdrive ratio), but I still dont like em. My truck is just barely turnin over 2k at 80mph. 4:10's with some pretty big tires might be ok, but 4:10's just put the cruise RPM too high for a cummins to suit me. I love mine on the interstate. And If Im pulling around 65mph, and under around here, I usually just run 3rd. I honestly would be very shy'd away from a truck with 4:10's(mainly with a 5 speed). Im sure with big enough tires, the 4:10's would be fine. I just hate them with stock tires. You feel like you are wound tight running the speed limit.
