Ever since 4wheeler called it a hybrid dana 80 everyone calls it a hybrid, it seems like that caught on but ive never understood why so many people call it such.

Do we call a dana 60 with 30 spline axles a hybrid since it doesnt have 35 splines. the spindles hubs and bearings in the full floater versions share similar part numbers with the 70's and 80's so does this make a full floater D60 a hybrid HD D60 over a semi float or any other varient of the 60?

Do we call a dana 70 a hybrid because it shares the same hubs, wheel bearings and spindles as a D60 and comes in 32 or 35 spline versions, would the 32 spline be a hybrid because its not a complete 35 spline. There is a 70HD over the std 70 but that uses different carrier bearings and a slightly modified carrier

And then the D80 gets called a hybrid because it uses 35spline axles instead of 37??
it basically shares the same hubs, spindles and bearings as a D70 and the D60 on the outer end but even the HD versions of a D80 share the same part numbers if im not mistaken and the axle as a whole gets a higher rating than a 70 (even in a "hybrid" application)

I never have understood the logic behind the hybrid comment, i thought axles were defined by the R&P and std spline counts that are used, a hybrid would be a non std application, wouldnt 8 years constitute a std run application ???.

Got it. So what is the 267 MM listed on my build sheet? Just curious.....and I guess I'm assuming some significance...just because it's mentioned?

267mm is 10.5" Guess the metric way of saying it has a 10.5" dia ring gear.

....It always made me wonder when all the 2nd gen 3500's list the D80 in the build sheet as a "D80 hybrid"?!?!?!.......The ONLY thing the D80 shares in common with a std. D70 is the 1.5" 35 spline axle shaft!.....and even at that the only thing the D70 HD has common with the D80 over the shaft size is the carrier and carrier bearings....everything else is different!

ddestruel,

I have always wondered where this "hybrid" term came from....I have always referred to the Dana terminology of D70 HD never as "hybrid".....funny how DC refers to the real D80 in their build sheets as a "D80 hybrid"......You can see where much confusion can be caused by people that are not that familiar with Dana axles!

Gear casing sizes are determined by the torque applied to it not the weight that it handles. Generally the size of the engine but with the automatic there is much less low end torque fed into it.
