12v Power Upgrades???
12v Power Upgrades???
Hey, I just discovered that I have a 12v rather than a 24v, when I was installing DD2s for a 24v. Now, I have to start over again with my research, so I have some questions.
#1 What is the best way to get the most streetabl hp out of a 12v???
#2 What does sliding the torque plate forward do as far as HP gains???
#3 Ive heard moving the stock torque plate fwd can be bad and that it would be better to buy a TST plate instead. What is the story on that???
#4 What would be the best torque plate to use??? My set up is for off-road, street, and maybe some sled pulling in the future.
Well, thats all for now.
Thanks,
sam

Re:12v Power Upgrades???
Hey Gray,
Just put a Piers #10 and 300GSK on the 96 and it really woke it up. EGTs were alittle high so I straight piped it two nights ago. Might not be a sled puller, but it run ALOT better. ;D

Hows your tranny holding up so far??? You been keeping an eye on temps??? Im just curious about how it will affect the tranny. I cant afford any tranny upgrade right now, and esp any tranny repair bills!!!

If you dont have the cash for the tranny upgrades I would recomend taking it slow. Go with a nice set of 370s or maybe some of Dons EDMS
. After you can save up for your new tranny then you can go for the plate ;D, that is of course after some exhaust and intake upgrades
... or maybe a nice B1KS
;D ;D.

Re:12v Power Upgrades???
Just to let ya guys know, I DO have a AFE system.
Can you guys tell me more about sliding the fuel plate forward??? I think Im gonna try that, since it offers some free hp, but I dont want to screw anything up. Ive read TST instructions on putting in a new plate, but Im not sure how to slide the plate forward. Also, Im not sure I understand how to remove the front Passanger (I think) break screw. Can anyone tell me more about this???
BTW I ordered a set of DD2s for a 24v before I knew that I had a 12v :-[ The guy says he will work with me. Im not sure what he has, but do you thin the 370s are the best(as compared to, let say, 215s or 300s)???
Thanks,
Sam

Re:12v Power Upgrades???
Some guys drill a shallow hole in the break-off screw and tap a torx bit into it. I didn't have much luck when I tried it. Ended up using a small punch to unscrew it. To slide the plate, mark it's position first, undo the 2 screws and slide away. The screws are pretty tight. Use an impact driver or a screwdriver bit on a ratchet. You might have to adjust the gov lever. Here's the directions on Piers webite. http://www.piersdiesel.com/LeverAdj.htm
You may want to consider getting some gauges if you're going to bomb. I got a rude awaking when I saw my EGT's after I installed my pyro. I had my #8 plate slid a bit. Rod at Wildcat told me it was probably getting pretty warm when I bought my gauges from him. Rod knows his stuff.

Thanks for the help!!!
My guages should show up any day now. I got Boost, pyro and tranny. Is the fuel pressure guage really important???
Thanks,
Sam

Re:12v Power Upgrades???
Naw, You don't need a fuel pressure gauge. The 12v are alot better for fuel pressure than the 24v. I have a #8 plate in mine (there when I bought it) that is slid full forward. I don't know if it was in the stock position before I slid it. I really didn't notice much "seat of the pants" increase in power though. I have been told that it is about 20 to 40 hp increase but, like I said not much differance in mine. Before you slide your plate or do much to it, PUT GAUGES IN FIRST!!!!!!!!! That cannot be emphasized enough. You may want to go to TST's website and search for what plate will give you what hp. I figure with the set up that I have I should be somewhere about 230 to 250 hp and I have enough power to over power the tranny. It is not getting any better and now I am getting the $ together for a tranny. Expect the same out of yours. Remember- once the bombing bug bites there is NO CURE.
Re:12v Power Upgrades???
I am getting ready to do a 97(180hp pump) and I will be using the #10 plate and the 3K GSK. This should be about 250hp+ or - so the transmission should be fine.
This truck is also getting a set of gauges(pyro and boost)..
