'03 HO Performance Mods

I am wondering what performance mods people have done to their '03 HO and how they like them. I am also wondering what kinds of mods can be done without having problems with the warranty. I would like to put on a 4" or 5" turbo back exhaust, and add a chip or box to add 50-100hp. What do you guys recommend?

Jeff

[/quote]
Power enhancing mods, especially boxes (a.k.a, "chips&quot or big injectors, leave you without a drivetrain warranty. Even if you remove the box before service, the tech can tell it was on there by reading information that was stored. Different air filters most likely would cause Dodge to void the engine warranty. You could probably get away with a larger exhaust, but even that would depend on your dealer. You play, you pay. IMO, anybody who tells you otherwise is kidding themselves; Edge Products is honest about this; e-mail and ask them. If you want the power, then pick a number like 10,000 or 20,000 to drive stock, work out a few bugs, and then after that forget the warranty and start having fun.

Yup, you's wants to play...be prepared to pay.
Never assume that your dealer will overlook what you may have done either as they can turn on you fast when DC lays down the law on them.
Dealerships up here are also looking at injector upgrades...kind of a reverse onus thing. If they pull the injectors and find they are stock...they pay all the labor.
If they find non-stock injectors, you pay and get a restriction on your trucks warranty...on the engine and even the entire driveline. At one time it used to be that they could not mess with your truck but its obvious they can to protect their own interests...thats how the snooping for tell tale electronics issues has come about and now the mechanical stuff on the 24V is getting scrutiny just like the Pump alterations on the 12V did and do.

They can check your entire truck out if modifications are suspect to a failure.
Jeff K:

Welcome to the website!

"HC" and "Scotty" have already given you good advice.
I would like to add that the addition of a 4" or 5" exhaust
is not going to "void" your warranty. One thing to remember
about the newer trucks is that Daimler-Chrysler and Cummins
have computers that can be "connected" to the engine to
"read" the information contained in the ECM. This is especially
true with the Cummins "INSITE" Software!! That thing can
read highest top speed, idle time, fault codes etc. Not all
Dodge dealers have this, but all Cummins shops do!

Another consideration is what kind of relationship do you
have with your Dodge or Cummins dealership?? If you have
a good relationship and know the technician and the service
manager, some "failures" can still be taken care of even WITH
"modifications" such as fueling boxes! I have personally
seen this happen on several occasions. But, if you don't
have a good relationship with them or don't know them well
I would be very careful.

Hope this has helped you some!

-------
John_P

Re:'03 HO Performance Mods

Thanks for the info guys! I really appreciate it. From what I can tell by reading posts in this forum is that there are generally very few problems with the cummins engine anyway. I think I will do what HC recommends and drive 20,000 to make sure no major problems arise and then "BOMBs away!"

Thanks Again!

Jeff

Its 3.5 between the turbo and muffler then 4 the rest of the way. I heard a truck at the Monroe dyno day with a 4" and dd2s and it sounded pretty good IMO.

Re:'03 HO Performance Mods

the manufacture can not dismiss a warrantee due to a modification. they have to prove that that modification caused whatever damage then they can choose not to cover the damage under warrantee. A chip exhaust or intake should not be a problem...has anyone had any first hand experience with Dodge not honoring the warrantee due to a chip exhaust or air filter change?

Re:'03 HO Performance Mods

First hand experience? Check this thread on another page:
http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...p;pagenumber=1

For those without enough time to read it all, this poor guy fought over a warranty issue for almost 2 months before getting satisfaction. His sin: He changed his own oil filter.

If you do performance mods, DC is, and I mean IS, going to void your warranty if there is a problem. Once they do, the burden of proof is going to be on you. The law will only protect you IF you are willing to fight it out in court to enforce that law, and, if you have done performance mods you probably won't win like this guy did.

Re:'03 HO Performance Mods

Local dealer voided my warranty for oversize tires. I went to court and won. Later they tried to deny warranty for a power mirror that stopped working because of an aftermarket exhaust I had installed. I got them to fix that by the threat of going to court. Guess they figured I wasnt kidding. I would think your relationship with the dealer would factor in, mine was poor as you have likely already surmised. I would avoid performance upgrades unless you are prepared to give up or fight for your warranty. Oh, BTW if your a fighter I was able to get my costs. The lost time and hassle can never be repaid but I consider it a matter of principle.
