Yeah, he was a Gunny at 12 years. MGySgt at 12 years is 99% impossible (never say never)

Now that I think about it (and looked up the stripes) I'm pretty sure it was only 3 down. Shows my lack of military knowledge.

Of course at this point I guess it doesn't really matter. Now he wants the family to call him Sir. (Not really, but we did kid him about it)

Guess I should practice the proverb
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and prove it"

Before I say anything else, I'll ask my BIL.

Thanks for the correction.

Nah, it ain't like that, man. Just trying to help a brother out. If you don't deal with it every day, you're just not used to it, that's all.

I was just thinking I should have left well enough alone. My bust.

Glad you corrected me. I would rather see it correct then mislead. My BIL may only be Gunny and I remember it wrong. Heaven knows my memory certainly seems to be going these days.

Is it proper for a civilian to say Semper Fi to a Marine?

Personally, I don't mind it, but some guys are buttholes about it. It kind of is a Marine thing, but I understand how civilians are just trying to be respectful.

Thanks for the info mad. After posting the question here I read some other sites and can understand and respect the meaning of those words between brothers that have served in the Marines.

I'll simple say a respectful Thank You.
