WIN XP home network

I am trying to set up a home net work through a switch and cat 5.
I can not get the computers to see each other.

any Ideas? Could it be because DNS Server has no numbers?
Thanks

Make sure the computers are all on MS Home or your designated network. Then go to controls and enable simple file sharing on all computers, then right click on all of their drives and enable drive sharing on each without restriction or permissions.

Done.

Leave the firewall ON on the rig sharing the Internet connection (host), turn the firewall off on the the rig(s) that look to the host for Internet access.

And I wouldn't simply allow full access to any drives unrestricted. Allow only the sharing of files within a given folder (higher security).

Initially, you may have to go into your network places and open the link to workgroup computers (XP pro), navigate to the computer you wish to connect to and create network connections to each shared folder available.

If you've not disabled any services started by the default XP install, then the IP server and DNS server should be automatic on the host rig. Same for the IP Address and DNS Client rig(s).

Hope this helps.

First, do you have an Internet router? If you do it should be set for DHCP.
Make sure all your computers are setup with the same workgroup name.

I can help you, but I need more info...

Do you have one of those "all in one boxes", like a Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc. "Routers" as they are called (though that is incorrect)? These will usually assign IP addresses to your computers along with the correct DNS server settings. Your modem will connect to the "AIO Box", then the box will either have ports in the back that function as a switch or you connect the box to a switch and connect the computers to the switch.

We need a little more info on your current setup. Having the modem plugged directly into your computer will not work the same when plugging the modem directly into a switch.
