whats your thought process on tipping?
I will usually give 20% or more if they keep me watered well. The easiest way to cause me to give less is to let me run dry!
Most times in a diner for lunch when I get a burger or something low cost and the total is under $10, the tip will sometimes be upwards of 30~40%, again depending on how well I am watered.

I swore I would never work in the food industry, and I haven't really aside from delivering pizzas. I rarely made food, mostly boxed and delivered. I didn't really rely on tips but on a good night it was nice to know I made 6 bucks an hour before the tip money. That's a tough job, especially during rush hour. My biggest complaint wasn't so much bad tips, but the fact that 50% of the houses had either difficult to see house numbers or none at all. Oh, and I DID remember who tipped good and who tipped bad! Needless to say, if you tipped good I made sure I got your order to you as quick as possible. If I knew you were a notorious non-tipper I made sure to stop at every gas station on the way and spend at least 2 minutes reading an atlas or something, lol. It works both ways. I know I just can't stand a non-tipper. There was one lady in my store's delivery area who was notorious for never tipping, at all. She lived in the delivery zone that was the farthest from our store. It didn't matter how quick you got there, she never tipped and always paid with either a check or had paid with a credit card...never cash cuz she probably knew we didn't carry coins. Heaven forbid should she not get a couple pennies back. The lady was always nice, and you'd think she'd tip you the first time you delivered to her but we all knew she never would. And she wondered why she always got her pizzas luke-warm.
Anyhow, I tip well especially after holding a job where some of my pay came from tips. Even if the service seems sub par I still take note of why it is, such as a very busy restaurant where not only are all tables full, but there is constant traffic by hosts and hostesses, people being seated and leaving, and of course the servers. All that can make it seem like your server is slow but in fact they're doing the best they can. I have to experience absolutely horrible service to stiff someone. Even when I get not so great service, I might leave a buck or two.
I don't mind that at all if I am particularly thirsty and I notice that the waitress is very busy with many other tables. Heck, I'm happy drinking right from the pitcher, especially when it's full of beer lol.
Oooooh boy, that movie. Wow, it'll make you think a few times before being rude to your waiter regardless of how they're treating you. That's what complaining after the meal is for, lol.

I recently had a waitress notice that I go through lots of iced tea, and she set a pitcher of it on the table for me. Wife was insulted, felt like the waitress was saying "well, if you're gonna drink it ALL, here it is!" I was thankful, because the waitresses usually let me run dry at some point. She got a fat tip.
I think the movie was called "Waiting", and it's mostly true. I was a waiter in my college days and watched a lot of that unfold in the kitchen. One cook left a steak down the front of his pants for 5 minutes because of a particularly nasty customer. Again, tip the staff decently, talk to the manager and maybe get a coupon or discount for next time, and avoid hepatitis. It's a win/win.
How much would you tip at a restaurant if they dropped off your food and forgot about you?
No different with delivery. They drop it off and leave. They are paid better than waitresses, with or without milage included, so i dont try to hear non of that nonsense! I tell em drive around the block then come back and ask how the pizza was or if i need more crushed peppers. THEN you deserve a tip. Till then, youre no different than the mailman!
i kinda figure someone is thinking:
"it's not worth going to work..i can make more money on crack/welfare/alimony"
i figure the better the tip, the less likely they are to quit, and ......do whatever...
i do $2~3 under 20.
$5 under 50, $10 under 100
is that too much, or too little?

if the bill is $40 and under, i usually tip $10. if its over that, ill go up from there usually in $5 increments. if the service is "poor" excluding all the possible circumstances that could have made it "poor" service, i still give 20%. i do remember two Christmas's ago, i was eatin at sonic for lunch, and my bill was like 4 or 5 dollars. something (the good Lord) told me to give her $25 after i paid the bill. i called her back over, and gave her the 25 and she sat down and started to cry heavily. she told me she was exactly 25 dollars short of makin her electric bill for the month. she was a young single mom tryin her best. i thought it was pretty cool. so you never know who youll be helpin out one day.
My thoughts on tipping can be summed up in two words. George Costanza.
Put down $5 and take $3 back.
But on a serious note, I go by service just like everyone else. I only eat out when my wife is along, she's good at the whole math thing.

If it's good service, I like the thought process of Steve Martins character in My Blue Heaven, "Often and Excessively". Someone didn't like the pitcher at the table. We where recently at a Lone Star. They were really busy and having trouble just keeping the 7 of us glasses full. He asked if we would like him to leave a pitcher. We loved it and gave him a really good tip.
I get yelled at all the time by this to the point i never do delivery anymore.
