whats your thought process on tipping?

i kinda figure someone is thinking:
"it's not worth going to work..i can make more money on crack/welfare/alimony"

i figure the better the tip, the less likely they are to quit, and ......do whatever...

i do $2~3 under 20.
$5 under 50, $10 under 100

is that too much, or too little?

I was a waitress/bartender for over 9 yrs. I always got 20% if not more.It depends if your customers like you no.1 and 2 how well you do your job.
Most places are between 10% and 20%.

15% if the service is average
0-15% for poor service.
On the rare occasion we have done 30-40%, and commented to the server that, "This is the best service we have ever had!"

I start with a 20% baseline and work up or down from there. I have never waited but have had lots of friends who have, it's not easy work.

Another thing I do is pay with plastic but tip in cash. The servers seem to like that approach.

20%, It's easy to compute.

If it was really good service I do 20% + round up to the next 5 increment.

Example:

$68.00 X 20% = $13.60 ($81.60 total) *68.00 = 6.80 X 2 = 13.60*

If really good, I round up to $85.00...25% tip.

I'm all over the map. I don't use percentages, I use service quality. I've never tipped so little as I did when I was in toronto two weeks ago. Some of the worst service I've ever had.

On the contrary, if I go to a bar and get great service on a 20 dollar bill, I might leave 5-8 bucks.

I worked in service before, so I can appreciate when someone is in a great mood and giving you great service. Spoil them, they earned it

Its all about the service. I tip between zero and 75 percent. Im there to enjoy a meal, beer, haircut, etc or what have you and relax......if they make the experience better they get better. If they lean over my food and sneeze and whine about their boyfriend beating them or scratch there butt before handing me my food or whatever its all down hill from there.

I generally leave between 15 and 20 percent. I left a .25 tip many years ago. Called back to the restaraunt and asked for the waiter........I calmly explained to him that it wasn't a mistake and yes I could have afforded more, but in all reality it wasn't a tip at all.......I told him to go buy a newspaper because he was never going to survive life as a waiter!!!!

Poor service around 10%. I remember only once tipping 0.

I'm willing to bet on avg I tip 15-20%. I eat out every meal. I haven't been to a grocery store or walmart in over 9 months.

Generally on most meals like $8-13 like $1-2 and sometimes I'll just add up the change and round up including that in the tip... so like $8.65 meal will get a $1.35 tip... makes it $10 even and around 15-16% tip. I just made that $8.65 meal and tip up in my head . I'm getting pretty good at this math thing... i double checked it on the calculator.

good service gets a minimum of 20%. in most states, waiters are allowed to get paid less than minimum wage, so they depend on tips for most of their pay.

I tip at least 10% on a bad waiter/waitress. The reason is this, they need the money. But to make yourself heard, tell the MANAGER! He would not know that people are getting a bad service if we never tip and think we are the bad people....

so waiters and waitresses aren't regular people busting their butts to pay their bills, but people who are one step away from smoking crack, going on welfare, or doing 'whatever'?

real nice...........

They get what they work for. If my glass stays full and I don't have to get it myself... they make good money...
