What would you do....honestly?
They say most vehicles are broken into now for whats inside, not to be stolen. I live on the boarder....cover up. The police may treat you like the criminal if you try to protect your property..I know it's frustrating, but not worth going to jail over.
1.) Much as it pains me to say, put away ANY thoughts of using your guns. Short of Texas, this country has lost any respect for personal property rights, and simply pointing a deadly weapon at a perp would probably get you jail time.
2.) Forget any physical act, for reference, see #1.) above.
3.) Post stolen signs, check with local Pawn shops, etc.
4.) Evaluate where you park your truck, lighting, position from the house, visibility, etc, all enter into the equation. A cheap camera tied to a video recorder can work wonders, but do not be terribly surprised if even with recorded evidence, the police do nothing.
5.) Find out who is doing the thieving, and plot a sound strategy to use the above tranquilizer dart and gunnysack to full potential. ( just kidding, or am I? )
I dont mean to be a downer here, but these are the realities we face in this country, where the rights of the perpetrator are greater than those of the victim........ and no, Im not going to get into a discussion about how we become the perp when we protect our turf.

im going to wire a door switch on my truck that will set off my air horns if the door is opened. just put a switch somewhere to arm/disarm it and when i park it in a bad neighborhood, or park it at night i can turn the system on...i bet that will get someones attention if they try to break into my truck to steal my stereo or gauges
Second Round: Rock salt
Remaining rounds: #2
I feel that is enough warning.
Also I wouldnt shoot someone, with a REAl gun, for keying my truck, but criminal mischeif after dark is punishible by deadly force.
Actually, it won't! as I found out...
I had one particularly scroungy feral tomcat that insisted on bedding down on the warm hood of my brand-new '81 Toyota diesel PU. Every time I opened the apt door, he peeled-out, scratching my paint
.
I tried hooking my truck to a fencecharger when parked in my carport. Since the feral cats would "jump" up on the hood, they never bridged the chassis and the concrete. Only works if they "rub" up against it first...
It worked well on PEOPLE though
Remember to inform your landlord about it
For cats, I had to go to a carport perimeter wire about "cat nose" high.. THAT worked!
I actually would like to engineer-up a null-balance "capacitive" proximity detector bridge where the truck body is one plate of a capacitor, and the ground and an intruder's body acts as another. When armed, the capacitive bridge would balance with just the ground, and if someone closely approached the chassis, it would unbalance the bridge detector, setting off an alarm. But, an ungrounded person (on rubber shoes) doesn't present much extra capacitance in proximity to the big capacitive value a truck body represents...
But at least if they "touch" the truck they would represent more than enough change to unbalance it.
Anything to greatly cut down on false alarms.
Passive Infra-Red motion detectors work too sensitively in the cooler times of the year, and during the summertime they are not sensitive enough.

I had my aluminum truck toolbox broken into a few years ago..
I know it was left locked, but as I went to work one morning, there it was ...with the lid standing open and all my tools and the aluminum tool tray gone! It turns out all those same brand aluminum toolboxes had the same key!
I've seen many toolboxes with the corners bent up, where people did more damage breaking in, than the contents deserved.
I made up my mind then I'm not locking my (now) tool-less toolbox anymore just so they can destroy the lid as they get in to find a jug of Rotella, Power service and a tow rope.
But I REALLY like the idea of two microswitches, one on each corner set to cause the K5LA train-horn induced cardiac arrest of some low-life when he "accidentally" opens my toolbox..
No high voltage, no automatic pepper spray, no .38 caliber slug, just a huge jolt of adrenaline to cause him to rethink his choice.
Now, a camera aimed at the perp as he gets "honked" would provide untold enjoyment for you later...
I'll have to seriously consider that...

my truck has an alarm that pages me, and if i ever caught someone in the act i would yell at them to stop, call the cops and then hop into my truck and chase'em down. who wouldnt wanna get into a high speed chase? lol if they go home, go back the next night and rob them. haha and thieves usually prey on ppl within 5mins of their own home so finding them again shouldnt be too hard. when you find out where they live, thats when the real fun starts.. hehe
Something else to consider doing besides the motion sensor lights, is if it is possible, put a video camarea up to "watch" the truck.
If they come back, you got them on tape.
Just a thought.

whitedually the correct and polite thing to due is invite them in and give them a present like maybe your sons old ball bat or maybe at tool you get the idea.
But the important thing to remember is i never met a dead man that lied!
Getblown i really like the air horn and if you could get it on the deer camera or video even better would make for a fun get together for all of us to view i bet a judge would be impressed in court too.
