What are the purpose of finals?
Retaining and regurgitating are two totally different things. I just got outta my physics final and even though it was open book and open note and only 40 questions it still challenged ya. Hopefully I did alright. Now to spend the next 4 hours studying for my finance final later today.
Finals are to make sure that you learned the material, and not just memorized it for the test earlier. If you learn something, it will always be with you, if you memorize something, it will be forgot once you used it for its purpose.
And that's about what happens with I'd say close to the majority of students. They will memorize it for the exam and then forget about it right after they walk out. I know I do that for classes that I don't like or didn't wanna take but was forced to because some bureocrat decided that 12 years of english's and history's weren't enough and that I needed 2 more years of it.
mmmmm, i feel your pain. I graduated college last december, so i am done taking finals forever. I never even let them worry me. i never studied, neither did anyone i hang out with. It was just another day. We all managed to get by it. Nights before finals were spent fixing someones junk vehicle or drinking beer, which we did every night anyways. Some people would stress and stress over them, stay up for days studying...not my thing.
Then again, i took classes like hydraulics and diesel engine fundamentals and engine dynamics, so stuff either came naturally, or just made sense and stuck with me.
Good luck to ya

That's why I love hands on classes, or classes about things that I actually care about, things like beef cattle management or swine management, or livestock evaluation, I can remember the stuff because it interests me, and if not, I usually know enough stuff to sculpt a pretty impressive pile of manure.
That being said, the end of the week will be rough:
Thurs morn- Formulating and Delivering Nonformal Education
Thurs afternoon- Chemistry 2
Friday NIGHT, 6-9 pm- Statistics

Exactly. If it interests me I'll spend countless hours reading and looking and trying to figure it out (kinda like I do on this site
) but if it doesn't interest me then I have no motivation what so ever to learn about it.

That is for sure! Back at TSTC I never studied and managed a 3.7 because classes like aerodynamics and aircraft systems were enjoyable and fascinating. Now the algebra class was another story...thats partly why i didnt get a 4.0.
I've had a couple of prof's like that and I like that option. I've actually had that option and chosen to take the final for that just in case factor of making a better grade. But to me it doesn't matter if you make an 80 or an 89. It's still a B and it still counts the same.
I actually took the final when I had a high B thinking I could bump it to an A. Next thing I knew I was on the verge of getting a C. If we took the final you were stuck with that grade. You could not choose to keep it of not. Does some of you profs let you replace your lowest test grade with the grade of you final if it's higher?
Can't say it better!!
I am in the same position in a criminal law class I took for an elective for fun.
Anyways, it has came back to haunt me and now I am hoping to make a high grade on the final to replace that previous low test grade. Good luck on your finals. I have taken some of the classes you were talking about and know how hard they can be.
