The question stated that the conveyor belt would always move backwards at a speed equal to the wheels moving forwards. The issue of contention is the problem itself, and how the conveyor belt- wheels duality is intended to be interpreted.
In reality, the plane would be able to use thrust to move faster than the conveyor belt, especially if it is assumed for the sake of the problem that the axles have no friction. However, the problem explicitly states that the plane cannot move faster than the conveyor belt. So, more or less, the problem parameters override what would really happen.
And so, the argument agonizes anon.
And Madhat started it.

i turn wrenches, spend time with my girlfriend, daydream about what i'd do if i won the lottery (to my truck that is), go to school to be a diesel tech, work at Menards and my dad's farm, and drink beer, scratch, take naps when i can, i think that's it...

I kill deer and waterfowl. With great enthusiasm, I might add. Fish tend to fear me greatly, but I let most of them go. Beer drinking and creative swearing are part time hobbies. (They go together well.)
