I'm looking at buying a new Springfield-Arms XD sub compact and need some input on what caliber you guys like best for CC.

I have a choice between 9mm and .40 cal. I myself think the .40 would be better but didn't know if the 9mm had any good qualities that I didn't know about. I've never had a 9mm but have owned a .40 and currently own 2 .45 1911's.

.40, more punch when ya need it. The 9mm is a good round, just doesn't have the knockdown you need in a CC situation.

 

by CC do u mean close quarters? you will get more rounds in a 9 with a side stack

 

CC = Concealed Carry.

The gun holds 10 rounds of both 9mm or .40 cal.

Gonzo, That's what I was thinking. The only reason I know that a lot of law enforcement guys and gals use the 9mm is becuase it doesn't have the power to penitrate walls. : That way they don't have to worry about hitting someone on the other side. The only other reason I could think of for getting the 9mm would be weight but I don't think it would make that much of a difference.

A .40 with Hydro shocks will hit it's target and mushroom out, the round comes to a dead halt pretty quick. If you ever have to deal with some guy on an illegal substance, the .40 will stop him dead in his tracks, the 9mm will make him mad.
Go big or stay on the porch with the dogs.....

 

my department went with the 9mm for a cost savings and because the woman cant handle the bigger calibers. there lack of wrist and hand strength cause jams because the slide does not fully cycle if u cant hold the gun. I personally prefer a 45. I have a 32 for my cc. very small can hide it anywhere. when im out with it i use hollow points. my department issues +p+ hydroshock rounds for our glock 9mm, i also have a browning 380 not really what i would call a concealable gun. its not real big but definately not easy to hide in the summer.

 

I agree, Go Big! 10MM with magic tips. I do not want to make holes, I want to see parts falling off. JMO..LE

 

 

Like a said, I have two .45's and run Hydro Shocks in them both, and really like what they do to watermellons. So what even caliber I would get it will have the Hydro Shocks in it.

I'm going to order the gun tomorrow and will get the .40 8)

Just curious, Why the switch to the .40 if you have two .45s?

Concealed Carry.....and not true. Double stacked mags of both 9 MM and .40 both hold 10 rounds (unless you can find pre-bans).

I'd go with the .40. No question about it. However....9 MM is great for plinking because the ammo is so cheap. For concealed carry though....nothing less than a .40 for me.

I personally carry a Glock 30. 10 rounds of .45 cal 200 gr. +P JHP's. ;D

Ever try to conceal a 1911?? I agree though. Unless you just WANT to go to a different caliber I'd find a concealed carry weapon in .45 caliber if I already had two other .45's.

Darrell....if you DO want a .40 and haven't ordered the Springfield yet....you should do yourself a favor and go shoot a Glock 27 or 23. SWEET shooting guns....and more concealable than the XD.

Exactly.

Then, we wasted a bunch of money on change-over later anyway.

I think the two problems with the 9 are penetrating vehicles, and clothing plugging the hole in the hydroshock, hampering expansion. The expansion is part of the performance relied upon in the 9 anyway. The 40 will have extra "knock down" even if the round doesn't expand. I do like my Sig 9, but haven't had the chance yet to compare to a 40. I can get one to try though, maybe this weekend. I guess you can use the extra rounds with the 9 to "break trail."

That's why I'm looking for a 1911 Commander.
Looking to build something like this in the future, but can't afford the scratch right at the moment.
