What is this?
Anybody know what this thing is? It is on the roof (of a '96 Jeep that I just purchased) where the overhead console would be. There is a printed circuit board on the backside with six wires plugged into it. It looks kind of like a security camera enclosure but it is only about 1" in diameter and about 1-1/4" in length. It is also black in color. I have a picture of it but I don't have any way of hosting it.

Sure looks like a mini security camera.
Could it be a light sensor for an auto dimming rear view mirror?
Did that technology exist in 1996?, could it be aftermarket?
Ooops, nevermind, no wires coming or going to the rear view.

Back before 96, on the Grand Cherokees, the keyless entry transmitters used infrared instead of radio frequency to communicate. Being an infrared signal, the transmitter had to be aimed at that little receiver to work. They used radio frequency by 96, so I don't know why yours would have that. Maybe for some aftermarket transmitter, like a remote starter or something?

That's a satellite uplink antenna for the microchip that the CIA implanted in your brain while you were sleeping. Ok, I lied. I'm thinking it was early 96 keyless entry before they changed it mid-year. Then again maybe it's an electronic magic 8 ball???? lmao
