True.
Many years ago my company needed a small twin and someone brought us an Aero Commander. As I was looking it over I discovered some hard points under each wing. Hmmmm! Further investigation uncovered that fact that this aircraft used to be in Israel and flew with some sort of rockets under the wings. We decided on a test flight. Should have been simple, but one engine had the gearbox blow up just as the wheels lifted off the short runway. The engine consequently oversped and destroyed itself while the prop windmilled. It was a somewhat tense trip to the runway, but we made it OK. Needless to say, we never bought that aircraft.

29° windy and mostly cloudy. Up to 50% chance of some snow today and tomorrow.
Packin my bags for the red eye tonight. I'll be stuck in Sheboygan (Yuck) for the next 3 weeks doing engine changes.
I learned to fly in western Montana, mostly 170s and 172s. For my first solo cross country my flight instructor sent me east to the flat lands. Never been there before. No long range landmarks I was use to using. My most sobering and embarrassing moment was on that trip. Loooooooooong approach to Great Falls for a stop and go. I accidentally selected OFF instead of BOTH tanks. I got about a hundred feet off the runway on my departure when the engine quit. Good thing I had another 4 and 1/2 miles of runway in front of me. Followed procedures and got it running again while I was still in the air. Told the tower what happened and they said have a better day.

Cougar, ya'd think they'd have some sort of an alarm on that one. I would think someone selecting fuel off at full throttle might be making a mistake about as grievous as insufficient air speed.

..............tried it once - - and only once. Not fun getting out of the plane with the front of your britches all wet. ...........
Gorgeous day down here - - - hope it is your way too. Working in the yard trimming bushes, replacing a couple sick plants, repairing lighting. I was sweating when I came in to eat lunch.
Poor design of the fuel selector for the time and a common error. The lever will rotate 360°, one end feels like the other, and they put it in a place hard to see. There were no warnings or lockouts required on that aircraft. They began incorporating design changes on later models. On approach at low to idle power the silly thing will run for ever on what's in the fuel bowl. Follow procedure, #1 fly the airplane. That mean placing the aircraft in the best glide path. #2 communicate, let someone know you have a problem. #3, do your troubleshooting and cross checks.
I haven't selected empty yet, but one hot summer day in Biloxi, I sure was curious as to the new sound and loss of power on take off. Only one Mag selected. Tower even asked if I needed any help. Figured it out soon after.
Cougar- When I was 15, I tried to convince the folks I needed to buy a J-3 that was for sale in Big Timber. If I recall, the price was $1500 and lessons included. (Yea I still rub it in)
Scotty-Glad your leg is doing better. Infections can come back and haunt you. Hoping for continued good luck with it.
