Vandalized! Need Advice
My girlfriend and I were with my friends (Sarah and Joe) at my friend's parent's house on Saturday riding horses and such all day. My girlfriend and I decided to leave a little early and head back to Sarah and Joe's house for her to shower before she came over to my house. (If you follow all that...) My truck was parked out front in the driveway.
We got there around 11pm. She was in and out of the shower in 20 minutes and we were out on the front indoor porch getting ready to head to my house. Just then we saw Sarah and Joe drive by and slow down as if they were going to pull into their driveway... but they sped on past. There was a car WAY off the side of the road in the ditch about 100 yards up. Joe thought it was suspicious because of how far off the road it was and because no lights whatsoever were on. The minute they drove past this car is sped off into the distance. By the time Joe could get turned around the car was gone.
To make a long story short, as I was getting into my truck I put one of our blankets on my hood and noticed a large metalic strip on my hood. I thought it was dirt but upon further review it was a DEEP gouge in my paint. I immediately said "Aw man, there is a scratch on my hood"... then my friend Sarah looked at me with huge eyes and told me I didn't want to see the rest of the truck...
All 4 doors have multiple DEEP scratches on them. The hood has two long scratches amd both front quarter panels have gouges.
In short, we know exactly who did it. My girlfriend's exboyfriend. He works at a dealership and the car that sped off had dealer tags on it. This guy is already psycho. He has beaten her, cheated on her, the works... He called the phone company to get the address of her brother (my friend Joe)which is who she is staying with right now to get away from her ex. He has told her on many occasions that he was going to find her and beat her senseless. And he told her that he was going to "stomp" her boyfriend (being me... he didn't know who I was).
Anyway, we called the sherriff and he came out to inspect things. He said he couldn't do much because we didn't see him do it.
However, in a weird twist of events, we walked the ditch where he was parked yesterday and found the front dealer plate from the car. Not an actual license plate, but one of the plates that says the dealer's name on it... and sure enough it was from the dealership he works at (which happens to be 150 miles away).
This HAS to be good for something. It puts him in the immediate vicinity. He had motive. He has a history of doing this stuff. And he lives 150 miles away... he had NO reason to be up in this area.
The deputy working on my case hasn't called me back since we found the plate so I don't know what he is going to say.
What do you guys think? What can I do about this? I know what I would LIKE to do, but its not exactly lawful.

As for using someone who works for the Phone Company to get her unlisted number,
she should file an imediate complaint with the phone company security branch.
They can look at computer records and see who accessed her records and when.
It is a firing offence (No 2nd chance) for ANY employee to access a customer's records without the customer's permission, and especially if it was to access a non-pub or unlisted number.
Don't go the revenge route, you'll only give him the excuse he needs to try to weasel out of any possible charges.
If the local PD won't do their job, contact the State Police.

You are screwed! The evidence is circumstantial, and both of you have an oar in the water. The police will just ignore your findings.
I do not know about Ohio, but in Oregon the police only concentrate on high profile crime, things like double parking, jaywalking, burned out tail lights, etc. Real criminals just hire attorneys and sue the cops, so I sure do not blame the cops anymore!

Boy I remember those days. One night I woke up in the ER with a broke cheek bone three ways, a broke thumb, two ribs, and a fractured hip. I was spotted like a leopard too. A marine who witnessed it and put me in his car until the meat wagon arrived said 12 of them took me down. One coulda' tore me a new one but 12 to be sure it was fun. They came up behind me at a bowling alley we used to hang out at. I later learned I was hittin' on the ex girlfriend of one of them. But, I healed and I got the girl!
One is dead, another in prison from a different incidence. I love poetic justice.

Unfortunately, you didn't catch him in the act on tape so you're probably out of luck.
I can relate to some extent 'cause I lost about $3K in tools to a neighborhood druggie who broke into my storage building. I didn't catch him but his dad's jeep was missing a piece of trim and I found that piece of trim on my property right by a cut 5-wire fence where they got in. Sheriff wouldn't do anything because they said that even the trim only linked a vehicle, not the driver. My thought was that if the vehicle wasn't reported stolen, then the owner is liable to some extent.
Sorry to ramble but it does make a person angry.
I wonder if you could sue him in small claims court? You and him in front of a judge for damages up to $5K I think. I've considered it with my case but haven't taken any action yet.
Sorry for your loss but don't do anything stupid. You know that we'd be the ones to end up in jail, right?

Unfortunately, the local law enforcement folks are correct. Unless you catch him in the act, there's no way to prove 100% that he did it.
Sounds like the guy really needs to be scared. I mean really scared. Deep spooky, I don't ever want to go to sleep scared. Of course you can't do this, but it could happen if you know what I mean. Just promise that when and if he is a good boy for xx amount of time, then you will mail his ******** back to him. If he is not good, they you will come bck for the other one.
If you want to go further, then remember, if you torture him, the first thing that goes is the eyelids. A pair of toe nail clippers or wire cutters work well. Once the eyelids are gone, then he has no choice but to watch every thing else that you (or your designee) will do to him.
Do you get it???

Sorry about your truck.
If the 2 of you are not already packing, get your ohio CCW permit and know how to use your wepon.
If the ex lives out of state, it is a federal offence to threaten or intimidate a person.
Good luck

I don't know about your state.. but here in california if the damage is more than $400.00 then it is a felony which means you didn't have to see him.. just that a "reasonable person" would believe that there was a crime commited and that that particular individual was involved. If less than $400.00 then he can't be arrested on the by the officer (a citizens arrest can be done but that opens the citizen to all kinds of legal liability) but the city attorney can look into the case and see if he wants to prosecute. If you can identify the car you may be able to tie him to the car for that particular night through the dealership. You should leave that up to the detectivs though.
I would start with a Domestic Violence Restraining order. If he violates that he should be arrestable if he violates that restraining order just on the word of the victim. (at least that is how it works here in california).
