Re:U.N.
While this is an interesting thread and an easy one to fall into, I think the blame is mislaid. While I agree, the UN has many faults and shortcomings, it's the best thing we got going. Don't misunderstand me, I'm rather on the fence of seeing the UN removed from the US. HOWEVER, it's the specific actions of France, Germany, Holland, China and Russia who, through their offices in the UN blunted any honest effort to find proper resolution to the situation. We've seen submissions to this forum on why these countries have vested interests in keeping Iraq as a slave state to Sadamn. (Intentional misspelling). I'm sure they were/are encouraged to see the division in our own country. It's not the UN we should be targeting for our vitriolic statements, it's the individual countries who led by their veto threats who should receive our attention. Obviously, France in the person of their president leads the pack, in noise level, if nothing else. How about Germany's leader who won re-election on the basis of his anti-american stand? I personally think our State Department should shoulder some of the blame because they're too busy trying to please everyone and not looking out for AMERICAN interests. How much of our foreign aid goes overseas to support these countries? I don't know. I did see a report recently that many french winemakers were worried about possible AMERICAN boycotts of their wines. They're experiencing a downturn in their market and count on us to take up the slack. Perhaps we should redirect our "attention" to the proper "targets" and be reluctant to support their economy by buying their products. Enough, I'm done with the soapbox. If someone doesn't like my view, they are more than welcome to vilify me, at least do it in public so we can see what kinda "person" you are. OK, I'm done with the soapbox, next.

~Dave

Re:U.N.
Dave, I don't completely disagree. I'm also considering the borderline "AXIS" countries holding board or decision making positions in the U.N. Prior U.N. lethargy or indecision before finally participating in Bosnia, U.N. (as well as U.S.) lack of foresight and clear goals both during the first cease-fire with Iraq and when Inspectors were booted out in 94.

Sure, I'm very disappointed in Germany, having spent much time there and seeing how much our soldiers put into their economy, much less overseas trade. But like with Canada, I'm not upset with friends I made there.

Russia/China.... did anybody expect anything different?

France.... does anybody really like France?

Re:U.N.
NWDave, I agree with you in part. I suspect that the UN will soon go the way of the old League of Nations and the seat of power will move to Europe. But I am not going to get into that here.
I had a little free time this afternoon and made a list of the "U" words that may fit the start of this thread. Somebody else can add the "N". Re:U.N.
Oh I agree 100%. I find it the ultimate insult that our troops, tasked by a questionable commander in chief who had mostly contempt for our fine young men, and who I understand, had to be taught how to salute, were sent off to wear a blue helmet and serve under a foreign commander who was not even a theater commander. We provide the bulk of the representation, we should have an AMERICAN commander. Enough of the touchy, feely, let's make everyone happy with us. My stance with the UN is that there has been many things good come out of the UN too. I just don't want to throw out the baby with the bath water. Certainly though, the UN's impact is diminished. We just have to avoid the trap of wanting to rush back and try to placate them so we can all be buddies again. Personally, I'd chose other buddies.

~Dave
Re:U.N.
I would like to see the US get completely out of this useless organization. We pay for most of it, and they absolutely refuse anything we want to do. Write your Representative and have them support HR1146.

Here is a website that you just enter your zip code and it addresses your note to the right person.
writerep

Here is the bill: HR1146
