Check this out! Granted, it's a small engine (not like there's a whole lotta room in those engine compartments anyway...), but diesel nonetheless!! ;D There's hope for me yet...

If you get one to test drive you'll be impressed- less than half of the Cummins as an engine but works well- got to know some test driver of the prototype while offroading.
( There's a whole lot of electronics potential in this engine... ;D )
AlpineRAM

I grew up driving a diesel Isuzu I-mark car (now closing in on 200,000 miles and still runs good - looks like $h!+ though) and a diesel Isuzu P'up (same as the older Chevy Luv's) and loved both of them.. The car still gets about 45 to 50 mpg as well..

Now since diesel is more readily available at service station/convenience stores I think ppl will be more likely to buy one.. A guy at work bought one of the diesel VW Bugs and loves it.. in the 50 mpg range and decent power even with the auto tranny..

Had an '86 Jeep Cherokee with the diesel engine. It was very fuel efficient and still had good power too. The only real problem with that thing was that the timing belt most always gave up before it's reccomended change interval. We had an expensive break the first time.... At about 275000 it started to get to the point where we didn't know what to fix first so we traded it in... It was a great vehicle nonetheless and I hated to see it go... :'(
