Test drive
Re:Test drive
Good picture.

Only bad part is that I lost a friend to the same type of wreck. Was working the oilsands in Ft. McMurray and a hauler backed over his pickup. That was not good.

Beautiful downtown Butte America
Wayyyyy back when -------------------
We used to tell the guys time and time again -----DON"T park , or go where the driver can't see you ! ! ! we lost 2-3 trucks a year like this, and once even a freight liner tanker.
Sure was fun to take these things out and road test em tho after working on them . You havn't lived til you have done a 180 or a 360 on icy roads with one of these things.
Re:Test drive
I used to run the big Euclids at an open pit gypsum mine in Carson City, Nevada before I joined the Navy.
They do get a little squirrely in the snow ... made me a tad nervous trying to back up to the edge of the dump pile ... 300 ft drop off.
Sure wouldn't want to be in the truck underneath.

PISTOL
Does that BIG truck have a Cummins?
Nope, most the little ones had detroit v8s or v 12s With the larger ones having Emd (BIG detroit ! ) All were diesel electric which meant elect brakes (retarders) ( think of a really big toaster ) down to about 7 or 8 mph before the disc brake would even apply. There were a few Cats, and an old Alco even, There was once a experimental turbine powered unit . Used a lot of fuel, had lots of power, but it tended to set off the sprinkler system in the shop, which the other guys didn't appreciate ---especially when it might be -40 outside . Inside the heaters would allow the upper area to melt, but everything froze back up down at axle level . Really messy and cold work sometimes. You would wear rain gear at floor level and be walking around on ice or chipping it off of bolts and nuts to get wrenches on them. Don't miss it a bit !
