Windows XP or VISTA? I would start by making sure you have the most recent service packs and then I would download the newest driver. For starters anyway. Are you sure your speakers working. What are the circumstances of the failure, did they just stop? have you used them recently?

You can try this link -->here to see if their help section can get you going, but don't count on it.

Generally, hardware issues are caused by two things. All out failure or software updates which don't like the driver (software) that runs the hardware. Since your computer can see the sound card, I think that the driver is out dated and you operating system is not sure how to send the sound to it. Simply put, your computer knows the switch is there, it just doesn't know how to turn it on.

Let us know how it goes.

I have tried and drivers are up to date. If it was a sound card not built in I would just buy a new on. The Machine is an XP given to me for my son to use so its had unknown care LOL.

If the speakers aren't just turned off or muted and the card is bad, you should still be able to add a separate one if there's room on the mother board. You'll just have to disable the on board card and enable the new one. Since this is a "donor" if you haven't, you might want to visually inspect the computer to see if a separate card may have already been installed and not properly activated.

Did you try to uninstall the soundcard from the harware menu and then reboot the computer?
It sounds like XP has forgotten that the soundcard is a soundcard. (and so does not use it as a soundcard)

In hardware where it said device working properly (in the hw manage you get after a right click on the desktop icon, properties and then hardware) ypu have the option (again with a right click on the symbol) to remove or uninstall the hardware.
Even though you do not physicalle remove it, at the next boot windows will see it as new and do it's mumbo-jumbo as to what it is and to install it as a sound card.
