There are both good and bad drivers in all age groups. Regular testing, both in the written side of the law AND behind the wheel should be a must, to include freeway merging and speed skills testing. If you can't see over the dash or reach the pedals, you should not be driving a vehicle OR the vehicle should be equipped to raise the seat and move the pedals. All vehicles should be equipped with hands-free bluetooth technology or some thing that actually disables regular cell phone use while the vehicle is in motion. We should be rewarded with discounts when we are ticket free and accident free. We should be penalized in higher insurance costs when we cannot obey the laws and get too many tickets, and we should be penalized with higher insurance costs when we CAUSE accidents. An emphasis about driving responsibility needs to come into the driver's license courses. People need to learn to finish their dressing, makeup, hair combing etc BEFORE they get into their vehicle. They also should learn to eat at home or in the appropriate place. There is nothing wrong with using your cupholders for a beverage, providing it is not alcholic and those who drink alcohol and drive drunk need to just go to jail. If the penalties were stiffer regarding all the nuisance factors, maybe they would stop all the nuisance behaviors. A skills test should be mandatory for standard transmissions and endorsed accordingly. Same applies to motorhomes, towing trailers, etc. All of this would serve to get those out from behind the wheel who don't belong.

When it comes to older people driving on the freeways at speeds greatly under the posted minimum, they should be ticketed just like those who drive above the speed limit excessively. Many older people do not drive as much and as often, so their skills are less due to their driving inactivity. I agree that the woman driving at the slow speed IS an accident looking for a place to happen as a result of her being the impetus for one. They DO need to be tested for driving competence, and if they are not good for the freeway, they need a restricted license.

To make a long story short, I was traveling on a freeway, at about 5mph above the speed limit to flow with the traffic a little safer in my lane, had a young fellow get along side of me and spew a mouthful plus a couple gestures because he felt I was going too slow. ALL the vehicles in my lane in front of me were already exceeding the speed limit by the same 5mph and this guy gave as many as he could the same treatment as he did me as he moved foreward in traffic. That scenario speaks for itself, but I bet that same guy gets on some website complaining about people going slow.

I was shocked when i found out my new license in Arizona was good for 50 years.

Almost feel like im in LA running from the police when its bingo night.

I cant even count how many brake lock ups, jumped curbs, and immediate swerves to the side ive had to do to avoid hitting them.

Not all elderly are bad drivers, but mandatory re-testing would sure save lives and is a very easy thing to implement.
