Question for the 1999 Harley guys

I have a 99 wide glide. Ive always waited until the engine light went out before starting it which I was told by one dealer to do and another not to? The one time I didnt it now throws a code at me after the 4 second initial light. It has one 8 second flash. According to my manual theres a code of error being stored? it runs the same etc but.... My local dealer says if its running OK then ignore it and it will clear after some 50 key on/off sequences. Any thoughts here? BTW its not FI, but first year twin cam.
Thanks.

Harleys sometime throw a minor code from the Crank Position Sensor if the engine hiccups on cold start,
Mine did it a couple of times.
There is an On/Off sequence to get the computer to flash the light to read codes just like the Dodge 'puter does.
I can't remember the exact sequence, but I'll try to remember to look it up in my factory manual when I get home.

I have a 99 Roadking. The light is supposed to come on for 4 seconds, then go out. I have always waited for it to go out to start, but failure to do so shouldn't hurt anything. Once I picked up what I suspect was a bit of water in the fuel that caused it to miss and backfire once or twice. That caused storage of an error code, as it apparently commonly causes the crank sensor to read more teeth than it is supposed to relative to the cam position...

Anyhow...

If the light comes back on and stays on for 8 seconds or so, it indicates a stored error code in memory. If it comes on and stays on, there is currently a fault.

To read codes on a nonEFI bike, turn the key off, and then jump a wire between pin 1 and 2 on the data link plug (probably mounted just ahead of the ignition module).

turn key on, and wait 8 seconds for the check engine light to start flashing codes.

There will be an "Intermission", which is a series of rapid flashes (3 per second), followed by a 2 second pause, then it will flash the first digit of trouble code, at about 1 flash per second.

Then a 2 second pause seperates the first digit from the second, which is again given in flashes at about 1 per second (with 1 second between).

Another intermission of rapid flashes, then any subsequent error codes will be given as above, followed by an intermission.

The sequence will continue to repeat it's self, so you can count twice to make sure you have the code right.

Post what you get, and I'll try to help from there.

I knew some of you would have some insight on this. Thanks to both of you for the advice. Shovelhead your right in that it "hiccuped" when it started in. Ill dig in to it as mentioned, see what I find.
Thanks again.
