portable MP3 players
If it were i wouldn't buy anything but an ipod. you can get them in all shapes and sizes to fit your needs and they are pritty cheep. I would also get the biggest one you can afford, you will always be listing to different music and if you only can put 100 songs on it those songs will get borning.

I was given a Rio Sport. Its a no-frills, plain, simple mp3 player that is rugged and durable.
Quality seems pretty good and it has taken a beating without issue.
It runs on a single AAA battery that gives about 4 hours of play and comes with 64mb of ram expandable to 128mb.
Looks like they can be picked up for $40.00 to $60.00 depending upon the amount of memory.
Rich.

Count me in the Ipod crowd also. I have a 15Gig and a 20Gig. They are by far the best ones out there. A little pricey but worth it to me. I use it while mowing and it sure makes the time go by faster. Ipod also accepts Audible files so I can listen to books on audio. Not all Mp3 players out there accept Audible files. That was a selling point for me anyway.

Sorry, guys, but those iPods look like little lip-gloss cases to me.
I guess that's OK if they match your purse, though.
Might be tough to find one of these, since they've been discontinued in anticipation of a new model, but the Neuros II is the creme-de-la-creme of portables as far as I'm concerned. Built-in FM modulator so you can broadcast it to an unused FM station in your car, built-in mic for recording as well as line-in recording, built-in FM radio. Cool stuff, and it doesn't look all girly.

My wife has a 30GB Dell DJ I think it's the best bang for the buck. We also have some Iriver and have had good luck with those.

I would recommend not getting an Ipod, I used to work at Best Buy in the geek squad (computer repair) and we got more of those broken in than you would believe. At least 6 - 10 a week plus the Ipod minis. Bad screens, hard drives, buttons not working. Just my opinion.

You can get an off brandname version that has replaceable batteries, easier interface, multiple audio formats, etc, for much cheaper.
Also keep in mind, the Ipod software only works on XP or higher, doesn't work on 98 or ME.
