Points to HEI System...

We bought my daughter a 1971 Nove that has a stock 307 with a points distributor which is being replaced with a new high performance HEI. According to the company where I bought the HEI..all it needs is a full 12v to work. He said follow the positive lead off of the coil back to the ballist and then connect to the wire before the ballist. Does that sound about right???
He also said the check to see if it had a resistor wire feeding the coil..
Anyone done this???

Thanks
Rick

Quite a few times. You should have a resistor wire running to coil from ign. Run a new wire from an ign term in the fuse block to the dist batt term and you will be fine.

What size wire would you use.. The wire that is on the coil now is real small.
Would #12 work???

Thanks

14 guage would be adequate but 12 is fine. The coil only draws about 3 amps or less. make sure you remove the wire off the starter sol that goes to the old coil or tape it up so it doesn't arc out.

Done it many times as well. I like to use a relay to provide the 12V to the HEI, it keeps the load on the ingnition to a very low amperage. It also allows you to run a hidden kill switch for theft protection.

Just a thought
