Yeah, we are nerds.

I know a little about building bombs and their components.
Not too big, but I did the power supply in this guided munition:

By "A", I assume you mean "Area", correct?

Graphite,

It sounds like we are in opposite boats. I also have a civil degree, but also a master's in civil with a structural emphasis. Most of my experience is in structural design of all types of buildings. I had a brief stint in Geotechnical that only lasted a few months .

NCEES website says bridges will make up approximately 20% of the S1 exam. Like you said, codes are like night and day from buildings to bridges. Figuring out the design loads on bridges a real PITA. I'm just going to study the component design (mainly stringers and deck) and hope for the best. I'm good to go on the other structural areas.

Good Luck,
Brad

Only a couple more days to go it looks like. Good luck and try not to sweat it to much.

I got mine a couple years ago and I know how stressful it can be.

the worst part of the FE was waiting the three or four months to find out if you passed or not.

I actually don't find geotech to be that difficult but I also have a lot of experience designing spread footings, drilled shafts, pile foundations and retaining walls.

The best advice I can give you on deck/beam design is to not forget the impact factor, the distribution factor and the continuity factor. If they give you a truck load, have fun.... unless you know how to calculate the maximum design moment from 3 different point loads on a simple span, you'll just bang your head. The CERM has a good example though.

Yeah, if I get a truck load I'm going to guess immediately. If I get design moments I might give it a shot. I think I can get the slab/deck designed, though. I have a "Bridge Engineering" text from a class I took that has some decent design examples.

Thanks for the advice

I'm kind of indifferent at the moment. I'm really glad that the experience is over for now. I was feeling really good after the morning exam, it was a breeze... most of us were talking at lunch at had the same response, "were those problems really that easy or did we miss something?" The afternoon structural module was brutal. It was definitely geared towards the building side. I guess we'll really know in about 10 weeks... until then, bottoms up.
