OK computer geeks..........

I'm typing this on the work Laptop....
My home desktop CPU has FINALLY ticked me off for the LAST FRIKIN' time.
It's going for a ride in the country with me next weekend sporting a spanking new target taped to the side of the case,
and will be executed by firing squad. (approx 100 rounds of .223)
Goin' puter shopping tomorrow for a new CPU.

Problem is, I'm clueless 'bout those things.
There's a can-lookin' thingywith wires going in and out that make stuff I type pop up on the monitor.....THAT's about the extent of my knowledge.
My last CPU is a Sony VIO bought in (I think) '93 or '94.

What should I be looking for?
Mostly surfing, and word processing type stuff.
I'm not a WOW-type online gamer or anything like that.

Suggestions?

So I go to the guy with the "Hi My Name is Bill" name tag at my local appliance store and say "Linux", and he gives me what?.........
Is that a super-secret code word?
I don't have the secret decoder ring, or know the secret handshake.....
Not much help.

given your skill level.
Pick up a laptop of your own. Look for something with atleast 1 gig of ram, preferably 2 or 4.
Intel processors are preferable over AMD for battery life.
1.75 Ghz dual core is fast enough for most purposes even with vista.
Harddrive size is up to you,
My work laptop is a Dell, I have a compaq at home.
Yea, you can get more power out of a desktop over a laptop, you can get more options out of a desktop over a laptop, but unless your a serious gamer or work extensively in graphic arts or 3d rendering, you really dont need it.

I dont advise Linux. Its got its own learning curve. Kinda like starting your computer use skills over.

here are two web sites, that you can get good deals, I would get at least 2 GHz processor, 2 GB of Ram, a good video card, such as Nvida, CDRW/DVDRW, and expandable slots for future up grades. I would not go to the big box stores because there cheap systems are bloated with software that is already loaded onto the computer, that you don"t need and it costs too much..

What is wrong with the system you have?

It's pretty tough to beat a DELL. Not the best, but not the worst. I've had good luck with them, but some swear by them & some swear at them!!

For about $510 + Tax below would work well for email & surfing. Not video editing or game playing.

Windows XP operating system would be better than Vista, but it is getting almost impossible to order. Everything is going to Vista, so might as well get used to it!! I have Vista on two computers & don't have any more problems than I did with XP.

The system below has a LCD 20" monitor & enough horsepower to do most things. And you can always BOMB it any time for MORE horsepower.

VERY sloooooooow, both page loading, and time from click to system response ...started getting multiple pop-ups this morning, running two pop-up blockers and STILL getting them.

Probably from 10+ years of web-surfing picking up crap off the internet.

Just looking for a new desktop for the house.

Wifey and I both have company supplied laptops.....but those are for work.
I don't want my personal stuff all over the hard-drive of my company-owned computer.

from a user's standpoint, Mac is a different operating system.
Its not windows, its not microsoft. its got its own web browsers, word processors, spreadsheet programs, etc.
Mac OS is a bit more refined and supported than Linux, but has some similarities (both show genetic signs of Unix)

What do you primarily use your computer for?

Mostly surfin', some word and photo processing, Wifey likes to play puzzle type online video games...that's about it.

Is it true that MACS are pretty much imune from the Internet Virus crap?

Ed, Check out http://www.ztsystems.com/Default.aspx?tabid=753

From what I've read they seem to be a pretty good computer. The thing I like most about ZT is that you can still get Windows XP.

not necessarily immune, but like Linux, Mac has such a small market share of absolutely clueless users that the virus writers dont bother with.
Who would you target? the 90% group, the 8% group or the 2% group?
