Re:no clutch shift

I guess there are all kinds of terms for this. Speed and power shifting I think do refer to racing, and yes if you force the stick hard you can and will mash the syncros and break shift forks. When I was trucking we refered to it as floating the gears or RPM shifting. In a small truck it's a little harder to do because you have a bigger RPM spit from one gear to the next and your drive line is a lot tighter than in a semi.(ie. back lash in the gear box and the diff's.) This gives you a little leeway.

With some practice you can do it pretty easy in a small truck with no problems as long has you don't hog on the stick. You have to get the feel for it.

Re:no clutch shift

Sometimes I clutch, most of the time I don't. On a hill on an downshift it is much quicker to use the clutch. Going up through the gears is easy, just a slight pressure on the lever as you let off the throttle and it will pop out of gear and the same pressure on the lever will drop into the next gear when the truck is ready. Shifting without a clutch is not the same as speed shifting or power shifting. Now maybe I am just a dumb redneck but a powershift is keeping the throttle on the floor and pressure on the lever and a stab at the clutch. When you break the trans you slick shift it. Grind every other spline off the sliders and leave the syncros out. A good verticle gate and a hemi and you have four gear rubber. Now when you miss Thats a different story. If you think you are going to race them without breaking them you are in the wrong hobby.

The ONLY time my gears ever grinded was when I didn't wait long enough after pushing the clutch in to put the little truck in reverse. They never did any grinding when I was power/speed/RPM/drive/float shifting.... ;D

Re:no clutch shift

Shifting without the clutch wont hurt the transmission any more than shifting with the clutch so long as it is done gently. Even using the clutch can be hard on the syncros if you force it into gear. I have seen people push in on the clutch and coast to a stop sign all the while trying to cram it into 2nd gear. You can just feel the syncros begging for mercy!! Doing what I just described is much harder on the syncros than shifting gently without the clutch.
You guys are correct, speedshifting or power shifting is just that,,leaving the go pedal flat on the floor, jam the clutch in and try to catch the next gear before the engine grenades. Used to do it all the time in my 69 Chevelle SS 396 4 speed. Could get rubber in every gear. Ohh the memories,,,, ;D ;D

Re:no clutch shift

I do it in my little Neon all the time (44 mpg).
Did it in the old B61 Mack I use to drive all the time once it got rolling, both levers.
Did it in my old 70 Chevy truck all the time.
Did it in the 48 Dodge wrecker I use to drive all the time.
Did it in both the S 10's I had a long time ago.
Did it in my 87 Dodge I had years ago.
Did it in the old Duster I use to have.

I DO NOT do it in my CTD at all. Totally different transmission. The 4500 transmissions are just barely suitable for this application so why aggravate the condition and make it go bad even faster. Use the clutch and do it the way it was designed.
