Need Help With Wiring Test
The power window on the drivers side of my truck stopped working in the down position. The power door lock and the passenger side switches still work. I suspect the problem is the motor/regulator that raises and lowers the window. I thought that I would use my multi-meter to make sure that power was going to the motor. I have never used the meter before to do this type of test. I suppose that I need to pierce the wire with the positive alligator clip and ground the negative clip. After I'm done should I wrap the wire that I pierced with electrical tape. I would appreciate any comments and/or suggestions.
Correct. If using a digital meter just set it to read volts. With an analog you will have to set it to a voltage range, like 25v or 50v, depending on the meter.
And make sure the leads are plugged into the correct sockets on the meter.

I would not use an Analog type Meter to check the lift motor, I would use a simple test light at the motor connector, the polarity alternates to give the window the Up and Down directions and if you didn’t know to switch around the test leads you could bend or snap off the needle as it flipped backwards.
It could be the internal circuit breaker
I realize you have a late model truck but the design of the motors should be somewhat the same.

MikeyB and Jim Lane, thanks for the replies. I will look into using a test light for this. I'm an "eletrical work" rookie - not even sure what a test light looks like. I'll do an internet search and see what pops up before I go shopping.
If you use a test light you need to connect it to the 2 wires at the end of the motor plug, the light should come ON as the switch pressed for UP and Down, this is good and showing the switch is working.
If the light does not come on then ground one lead to the door frame and then probe one of the wires in the plug then operate the Up /Down switch, one of the direction the lamp will light then move to the other wire and move the switch to the opposite direction and it should again light.
If in one direction the light does not come on then you need to look at the switch.
Tip: All of the power goes through the driver’s side door switch and then to the passenger’s side door switch.
I sometimes like to use a headlamp for a test light; it will add about 8 amperes of a load to the circuit and is good for checking resistance problems.

I just thought that I would report back on my test results. The motor/regulator was bad so I replaced that part this morning. It wasn't too bad a job other than I couldn't get the water dam exactly back like it was. Also trying to dislodge those pesky panel fastners isn't fun either. I managed to scratch the truck door a more than few times even though I was using one of those Snap-On panel fastener removal tools. Anyway, everything is working fine now.
