Need help with small engine

I have a generator that i got last week (roadside find) that has a bad engine on it. I am trying to get the generator head off the engine. How do i go about doing this? there are 4 bolts holding the mounting plate and the outer generator coil to the engine housing. My problem is getting the input shaft on the generator disconnected from the output shaft on the engine..... is there some trick to this? is it threaded? i am not very familiar with how these things work.

You may find there's a long bolt that goes through the gen shaft and into the engines crankshaft . . . . .. not sure on that.

I know the engines crankshaft should have a taper to it that fits into the gen shaft.

Hope this helps.

yes, most are a taper fit, with a long bolt on the end of the gen. armature. take the bolt out and you should see threads on the inside of where the bolt came out of, find another bolt about the same length ant thread, cut off the head and put a slot on it so you can screw it in with a screwdriver about five turns, then get a bolt which threads into the armature threads, tighten it down good and hit the armature with a mallet. some are really difficult to get off, but this is the best method.

3 days later, im about to rebuild the engine that is on there...... seems like that would have been easier and cheaper to begin with....... oh well, maybe i will just put it aside for a while and work on the seat conversion..... (3rd gen seats in the 97).... yes, i think 3rd gen seats are really comfortable......

Generator

I have several gensets at home and also maintain them for some of my clients at hospitals. (Check out the unit on my gallery)
Check out this board, there are people with info on just about any set ever made. and they are very helpful.
Jim.
