Boy Jack I feel your pain & anger. I'm sitting here right now just loving on our 1yr old chocolate lab. WE have had labs, dashounds, & our shepard we had to put down last year. Every one of our dogs mean as much to us as our children do.
My wife & I will pray for a full recovery of your dog & justice for the little culprit.

I have an idea on how you feel, when I was in 8th grade ( im 20 now) we had a beautiful Colie That we had since i was 2 years old. My moms always with my dog and myself because to this day i can remember picking up my puppy dog and seeing her in the back seat on the way home. But one day i was waiting for the school buss. Tippy( had a tip on his tail) was on the other side of the road. He was good and smart, wouldnt cross when cars where comming. and he wasnt. he was sitting there waiting for a" driver" to come by and the lil brat( for lack of other acceptable words) swerved TO HIT the dog. I yelled at my brother to go get the parents and i went and got the dog. It was a nasty sight. cut his belly right open and he spilled all over ( of course i didnt care) tucked it all in and brought him up to the hous and was yelling for them to get the gun ( couldnt stand hearing him cry like that) and before they could get out with a proper gun( grother brought a 20 gauge single shot..... but he didnt know anybetter) he died. SO my dad went over and ripped his parents up one side and down the other. They appologied and assured us proper action would be taken........ SOOOOOO the kid showed up with an estimate for a spoiler damage. Lucky for us my mother took picutures of the road where you could see the marks on the gravel where they swirved AT the dog. So we doubled the estimate added some mental trauma and loss time from my mothers work takin us dog shoppi nand everything. ( and at 120k a year it wasnt a small amount) and sued them for that. and won for animal abuse, and endangering our lives, And wreckless driving.

Is this grown up or not but the next schoo year i had my school permit and my 97 gas ram. Saw them comming through the trees one day and slightly pulled out.... just to "scare them" and they ditched it. Could they have gotten hurt.... maybe. But when you have no respect for life at a mature age( they where junior and senior at the time) I couldnt care less

Jack-
My sympathy to you and your family. As a fellow dog owner, I have an idea of the impact this is having on you. I'm glad you came home to a live dog, not a corpse. I believe your dog has a better chance of recovering emotionally than many. This is due to the bond he has with you, and the many hours you spend together. I'm sure your support will help him as much as the vets can.
As for the little bastard, I hope he is forced to do hours of community service, at the very least, and pay for all the vet bills. It is obvious that he has never had to face any consequences for his actions, which is too common these days.
Best of luck at the MRI tomorrow.

Dave

Restraint

Jack - your restraint is amazing.

If someone did that to my dogs, I can't say what I'd do. It's one thing if your dog is loose, walking around (still not acceptable if he's not threatening or digging or anything) but it's totally another if he's on your property, in his own pen!! And totally unable to defend himself or run away.

Press on at full throttle and don't let up 'till that kid (and his parents) learns his lesson... the hard way!

Thanks for the support. It's pretty cool to see so many people pulling for him. He did pretty good tonight, and I'm hoping tomorrow will be better. I am going to work him a little bit on Thursday and start full bore on the weekend again. I don't want to wait too long keeping him out of his routine.

Best of luck Jack.....I feel your pain as well. I admire your restraint - its pretty hard to keep your cool (at least for me) when senseless things like this happen.

Here's hoping Jonah has a speedy recovery.

too bad the state of NC probably considers slapping that kid in the face till he isn't stupid anymore to be "assault"

if you're training a dog for cadaver work you must know the local police of sheriff or deputies. i'm not saying you should do anything unchristian to the boy (i don't consider about 10 open handed slaps to the mouth to be un-christian, BTW - it might end up saving the boy's life) but maybe one of them owes you a favor?

also, i noticed you talked to the boy's mother. i take this to mean that the boy has no father. who'da thunk it?

Sorry to hear about this, Jack. I hope this doesn't make him skiddish or gun-shy. I'd love to see their face when they get the vet bill. If that was my son, he'd be wearing a BB gun neck tie.

He's at NC State right now. He'll be there all day, but if you want good medical care for your dog, that is the place to be. I'll let you know what I find out when they call back.

Jack, All I can say is wow! I don't know what I would do if I caught the little punk doing that to my dog. What a shame, this kid has no compassion for animals. I would make him tell his whole student body what he has done.

I hope everything turns out well.

P.S. SAR sounds like a good program. Do you see many Weim's doing this kind of work?

Jack,
My sincerest wishes for you and Jonah both in quick recovery of spirit. It is unfortunate indeed that there are people who would do such a thing, and they need to be punished when they act in such a way. Year before last, my best friend's golden retriever was injured by a car driving too fast on a narrow gravel road, and it took some time for him to recover. He is blind in one eye, but just fine other than that. This happened when he was a pup. Since then, he has been trained and certified for SAR and bomb detection, and lives a productive an happy life. I hope the same will be true for you an your dog. He looks much like the first dog I trained with in the military 30 years ago. My prayers for you both.

Good news from the vet. His eye is okay. The pupil thing is being caused by enflamation from being hit under the eye. There are no bb's lodged in his body anywhere. So now, once's he has healed, I have to work on his mental condition. I'm going to get him back into working routine soon so he doesn't slack off. Thank God for that news. whew!
