SSgt Bates here. Originally 0331, then 9916, now 0369. Was with 1/5, then with a Combat Replacement Platoon, then MARFOREUR.
Funny...never made it over to the Middle East while I was active, so had to come over on my own.

TxWelder,
I was on the 'Bon Homme' from '61-'63 on the flight deck ABF3, what is the
'Bonny Dick's' classification now? When I was on we were CVA-31.
Thanks
Bill

Geico226, did you row for the north or the south in the civil war? Sorry, I could not help that. I am actually far out numbered by sailors right now, I am on quota, and I am the Marine Liaison at medical on PI... All the fine navy shipmates...

I was in the 3rd Marine Division in Japan in '54 and then in the 1st Marine Division in Korea in '54, '55. We finally made it back to Pendelton for the remainder of my tour. I was a truck driver. Best MOS at that time. Learned lot's of stuff (mostly immoral).

I was in 1989=1992, school was over on Camp Johnson and the drinkin' took place everywhere! Dream sheet said, East, West or Overseas. I said to myself, " Self, their gonna send your butt overseas anyhow, so you might as well volunteer". So I did, checked off the overseas box. Sent me to Cali over there to Camp Hollywood Marine, you know where they teach you how to ride surf boards and where sunglasses!! Then we boarded a Fed Ex plane...odd I thought. Flew up to Anchorage, then to Okinawa.....boy that place was HOT!! Made me think of that movie Biloxi Blues with Mathew Broderic, "boy its hot, this is Africa hot".

After loosing a few pounds of sweat in Okinawa they buzzed us up to Iwakuni, Japan where I spent the next 18 months. Actually reupped for a second tour and took the money option. Got $80 extra for signing up, did'nt need no 30 day vacation back state side.....I had a girl over there I was a 3521 truck/LVS/hummer mechanic, played with the P19 firetrucks, that was fun stuff there and was doing some training as a wrecker operator. I was with MWSS-171, yep, that's right swing with the wing and if you can't truck it _________ it!

Got out in 92', have the same haircut....and people always say to me. "You were in the military were'nt you? They don't even know me or meeting for the first time. I say it's probably the haircut...then I tell them Marines and they usually say that's what I thought. Just how you carry yourself. Did they do something to us while we were at boot? Insert things in our brains? Just normal nice guys.....but if you throw us into a confrontation....they better pray we snap out of killer Marine mode before they end up dead.

It's good to run across fellow brothers, wish I could run across a few around November 10th at a bar!! Just one time a year, drink yourself into a coma, sing, laugh, talk war stories...or boot camp stories!

Oh yeah, and I married that girl I met over in Japan! We have been together since February of 1991, married since 1995 and have 3 great kids...well maybe 4....if you include me!!
