Marietta, Ga
Marietta, Ga
I got orders to Marietta, Ga and know nothing about the area. I am due there in July and am working with a realtor but dont know what areas to avoid due to crime or any other factors. If anyone has worked at NAS Atlanta or lived in that area please chime in. Thanks.
I'd recommend you not buy a house; NAS Atlanta is being BRAC'd, so not sure exactly how long you'll be there. Not sure where all the stuff is moving - I haven't looked into that yet, but I know NAS Atlanta is on the list.
You a TAR/FTS?

Lived there a long time. Best bet is to look in Paulding County which is about 15 minutes west of Marietta. Better prices on both homes and apartments, better schools if you are in the East Paulding School district, very little crime.
Well I have been advised against buying a home twice now. How soon could that base be closed. It wont happen next year if it even happens. None of the bases on that list are for sure closing. Not to argue, I just wouldnt think that the three years I spend there would be part of the closure period.
Well, it all depends. Carswell AFB (now NAS JRB Fort Worth) was first BRAC'd in 1991 and closed in 93. Then, I believe the 93 BRAC closed NAS Dallas (which didn't shut down completely until 98), moving it out to Carswell to take over that base. I think that happend in 98.
Atlanta, being a very small base whose Hornet squadron and, I believe one of its E-2 squadrons will be going away, too. Given that, I would think they could shut the gates there fairly quick once the list passes this fall. WIll Atlanta be on it? I suspect it will since it's on there now.
So, I guess the million dollar question, then, is: Does NAS Atlanta (remember, fairly small AD staff there, comparitavely speaking) affect home prices in the area? Also, if you're there fro 3 years, you could find trying to sell your house at about the same time as a lot of other people, driving the prices down.
And that doesn't even consider the possible "housing bubble" bursting. That's my take on it.
