Virtually everything the government does it does poorly and there are unintended consequences. In Florida the authorities who supposedly protect children get bounties for each child they take away from their parents and place with foster parents who are poorly screened and sometimes abuse the children which are just a meal ticket for them.
They use intimidation and quasi legal proceedings to steal children. An anonymous call is all that's necessary to start an investigation which could subject children to ruthless interogations which have been found to elicit false testimony. The children are badgered until they tell the questioners what they want to hear. They are lied to and told they no one will get in trouble if they tell.
The real criminals all work for the government.

Good thing they did, I guess. But that's still a huge invasion of privacy no matter what way you look at it.
I gave mine to me little sister. I'm still free!

By Geico's standards, everything that is said over cell phones is public domain too.
I don't know if "invasion of privacy" is the right term, but when police can track your position to a 30 foot radius whenever you have cell phone service, they essentially always know where you are. They essentially have a homing beacon in everybody's hands in the US. It should be illegal for them to do that. That's an ideal, and it's impossible to happen, but it still gives me something to complain about.
As for home schooled children, there are two kinds.
1. Those who have psycho, control-freak parents. The majority of people I know that are home schooled are followers of wacky religious cults. I know a few families that way, actually. Parents that are so "devout" that they honestly believe their children will go to Hell if they are within 10 miles of a public school. So, they keep them at home, brain wash them, teach what is on their curriculum, and so be it. These children definitely don't get both sides of the issue that they would in a public school, they get their parent's point of view. And if their parents believe in their religon that the world is flat (I do know these people), then that's what they teach their children. These guys go to college in science and have to learn that the Ptolemaic world view is in fact wrong.
1.5 A close cousin to home-schooled kid #1, only instead of this child's parents being total zealots, they're just morons. I know a few of these too. Quite frankly, they do teach some stuff in those teacher's degree programs. Parents quite often (i.e. always) have no idea of how to actually TEACH. Yay, they can get their kids to win the spelling bee. Yee-haw. They can memorize. I, with no charisma or teaching ability at all, can teach a dyslexic retard with ADHD to win the spelling bee. Give me 20 hours a day, heavy doses of drugs, liberal application of corporal punishment and the back of my hand (the teaching tools of choice for many of these parents), and I can teach anybody to win the spelling B. It is just memorization, and it is just a matter of time spent doing it. Now, try to get a homeschooler to write a free response question or some kind of advanced essay, and their "teacher's" (aka parent's) lack of knowledge on the subject will shine through.
2. A much less common kind of homeschooler than version 1 or 1.5, version 2 has parents that do not give a wooden nickel about their children's education. They either don't think their kids need an education, or just leave their kids to teach themselves. I know a few people like this, (and quite a few very intellegent people like this), but it is essentially just laziness. One of my buddys persuaded his parents to homeschool him for a couple years, essentially so he would have less homework and could sleep in. It may just have been because he was a slacker, but when he came to highschool sophomore year he didn't know what the Pythagorean theorem was.
A teacher does teaching. A parent does not. A parent does not know how.
And I do not agree with public education. Nothing should be "public", the government should not be able to run and mandate anything. They don't care about the money they put into the school system- it isn't their's. They act irresponsibly, and inefficiency abounds. Everything possible should be private. There should only be private schools. (Once again, this is one of those ideals that won't happen perfectly, but is what we should strive for.) Ran as company, educators would actually have something to gain from giving a top-of-the-line education, rather than just begging to the state government for more taxpayer money to waste on crap like "accelerated reading" or "bilingual learning".

Oh ... let's see, where do I start with THIS one ??
Begle ... you have the most abtract thought pattern of any person I have ever come in contact with.
If you have spent any time in a public school, you will see that the majority of the kids are held back to the pace of the slowest learner. I don't blame the slower kid or the teachers (they system is completely backwards)... but if my child wants to tackle basic algebra in the third grade or read a novel... then by God, I am going to help him do that. (Yes, we homeschool and yes, my 8 year old is doing that type work). My kids are VERY well mannered and polite. They know more about the US govt. and democracy than many adults do. They hunt, fish and play sports and work just like any other kid does. The added benefit is that I get to raise my kids ... not the teacher or the school system. I know what values and morals that I want my kids to have and that, historically is NOT the same ones that they were taught in public school. My wife and I are not teachers and don't have all of the answers but we are smart enough to do what is best for our kids and will do whatever it takes to do just that.
As for the foster-parent issue ... Begle, there has never been a competency course or qualification available to become a parent. We mate and BLAM ... instant parent.
There are, however, many mandatory courses and qualifications required in order to become a foster-parent. Florida has been one of the more stringent states when it came to qualifying to be foster-parents. Where they fall to pieces is with the case workers being overloaded with children who are placed in the system and the lack of adequate ways to keep the system operating. (Must be the same people who run the voting booths
.
I feel for the children in this particular situation. I am glad that the dirtbags that did this are in custody and I only wish that they could receive the same thing before they die for thier punishment.
Please know that this is something that happens all over the country, every day !!! There are children being tortured and families falling apart every hour of every day in this country. This is why they are always screaming for more foster families. The youth homes and orphanages (state and privately run) are filled to the max. They often have no choice but to send the children home with someone who may not be the best match for the kids. There aren't many families who would take a group of 5 kids. This leaves the kids in different homes, maybe in different parts of the country. Is that what you would want for YOUR kids or grandkids ??
I strongly encourage anyone with a heart to look into becoming a foster-parent.
Contrary to what you may have heard ... you don't have to have a lot of money or a huge home to make a great foster-parent to young person. You just need to care.
If anyone has any questions or concerns to share ... please PM me.
Sorry to be so long winded.

In addition to the 2.5 types of homeschool families that you happen to have met, there is at LEAST one other kind of homeschool family. That is the family that loves their children enough and takes their children's education seriously enough that they are unwilling to subject their children to the inferior public school system and so choose to make the sacrifice of personal time and money to teach the children themselves.
No, I'm not a homeschooler (no kids) but I have friends who are and while public education is "free" (paid for with our tax dollars), they pay for their own teaching materials and spend the time to educate their children. THIS is where the spelling bee winners and geography winners come from, not from those abusive families that you know. No, most of these parants are not professional educators but I can promise you that a parant who has the well-being of their child in mind will find a better way to teach that child than a paid teacher with an overcrowded classroom ever can.
Just keep in mind that what you know of California does not represent the rest of our great nation.
