I got a buddy in Wyoming that is an absolute gun nut. He builds custom rifles on the side and does 1000+yard shots, downright ridiculous. Myself, Ive gone out to about 300 yards with a rifle, I want to improve and go further. Although I have put a shot gun slug on the target from 100 yards away with iron sights, that woke my cousins up while they were shooting their rifles
He told me about this rifle, just crazy distances and absolutely amazing.

I've been running " Egg Shoots" for 16 years down here in Massachusetts.
"Long Range" is relative.......In New England, 300 yards is long range...
But I've been out to Montana, SD, ND and Wyoming many times and have shout upwards of 1000yds. Great fun!

You guys are all shootin that new fangled stinky powder. Remington Hepburn rebarreled with Douglas in 38-55, 53 grains of 1F black, 320 grain cast bullet (cut my own mold). Club shoots silouette to 500 yards but we found a dry lake bed to play at 900 once in awhile. Just a bit of bullet drop at that range.
Also shoot a 41caliber Ken Bresien cut slug gun (30 pound gun)in competition matches.

Long Range
Love to shoot long, haven't been keeping up with it lately, 4 month old son taking up a little bit of time. Rem 700 .308 with Mike Rock 5R barrel, done up by GA Precision, AR 50 for some longer shots, and my HS Precision 338 LM. Need to get dies for the 338. Shot the .308 and 50 out to 900 yrds, only put about 60 rounds thru the 338 so far, need to shoot more!!!

Back when I shot frequently, I would start at 30 yrds and work up to 100 yrd shots when the wind was calm or atleast in a favorable direction.
It takes a long time for 30 inches of aluminum to travel a 100 yrds.

Wow, 700 yards is a pretty good distance! What cartridge you shooting and with what rifle? I'm guessing you work up your own loads and chrono'd them to get trajectory tables? Whatever cartridge you're using you're gonna have some pretty good holdover at that range. Then you have windage to calculate...
My big game hunting cartridge is also my longest range cartridge: .270 Winchester. My rifle is a Remington 700 BDL in stainless steel, with a HS Precision stock, glass bedded floating barrel, custom trigger, and Leupold VXIII 4-12AOx40 scope. I sight in for 0" drop at 200yds which puts me at +1.5" at 100yds. The .270 Winchester is a pretty flat shooting cartridge but at 400yds I'm already at about a 19" holdover and by 500yds it's at about a 40" holdover. I've never even tried 700yds so I'm not sure what my holdover would be, but my barrel would be pointed so high it's look like I was duck hunting with a rifle!
I work up my own loads and weigh them. My best recipe so far includes Remington brass, Winchester LR primers, 130gr Hornady SST, and Alliant Reloader 19 powder. I can't remember off-hand how many grains of powder I've worked up in my current loads but I think it's about 52 grains. I'm chrono-ing at just over 3200fps (V) and MPBR right about 300yds. Anyway, it's more than enough to take about any game in North America which is good enough for me.
I like to play with my AR15 and SU16, but those little .223 cartridges aren't good for much more than coyote or jackrabbits and only under 200yds, so they're not long distance shooters.

I bought a Smith@Wesson MP AR15 a couple of weeks ago and this thing is pretty accurate.

I shoot a Remington 700 built by Patriot Arms. Barrel is a 26 inch Broughton, 1/10 twist, chambered in the good ol 30-06 and measures about .850 @ muzzle. Stock is a Manners with a 1 inch Pacmeyer decelerator pad. Rifle is topped with with a Nightforce NXS scope 5.5-22x56mm (awsome scope btw). This gun is a real shooter i must say. Didn't get to shoot @ 700 yards today, but shot @ 430. Turned out some sub 4 inch 5 shot groups @ 430, not bad. I was shooting 190 gr Berger VLDs, with a hefty load of R-22 powder @ 3050 FPS. I bought a Smith@Wesson MP AR15 a couple of weeks ago and this thing is pretty accurate.My AR15 is a parts gun. Lower is a AMEETEC Arms, and the upper and buttstock are DPMS. Upper is a 16" A2 barrel with shorty handguard, carry handle, iron sights (no optics right now). Buttstock is the collapsible carbine type. It makes for nice compact rifle and real nice to shoot.

For shorter distances... say 400 yds.. a .220 swift. to 500-600 yds a .25-06; beyond that I have a pair of .300 weatherbys...
For showing off though I use my FN-FAL match .308 with iron sights... 3 shots into a soda can at 400 yds.

...Hmmm I've never Had a problem hitting jackrabbits and Coyotes at 400yd.

No problem hitting them. The problem is stopping them (coyote that is, jackrabbits are no problem). Pop a yote with a .223 at much over 200yds and you're gonna be tracking a blood trail for a while. That cartridge just doesn't have much stopping power. Now, pop a dog with a .270 at 400yds and it's instant lights out, drops right where its standing.
