Installing new carpet

Ok so the rent house we are in only has carpet in my bedroom. The people before us were pigs. They had two large dogs that edit all over the place and the crapet stnks. Our dog seems to have picked him a spot to try and mark so now our house stinks. We are going to call the owners tomorrow to see about replacing the carpet. He has told us that if we do any work to the house just take it out of the rent. Being that carpet isn't cheap, I am going to run it buy him first. I had some rough measurments and it seems my room will need about 350 sq feet. Getting the lowest 10 year warranty carpet at Lowes was like $1.68 for sq foot. They also advertse 98 dollars to install the whole house. Not sure if it's cheap for only oe room so I and added the 100 dollar to get a figure. That brings me to just under 700, so I figure another 75 in tax. Does 775 sound a little high to have just the one room done?

I was expecting about 500 but not 775. This is the first time I have ever look at carpet so I am not sure if this is a good price or if I am being ripped off. What do you guys think?

I measured everything out and went online to check it... says roughly 345 so I figured 350. The room isnt your typical bedroom. It is very long. Measures 22' 8" by 14' 6" with a few little cut outs for closet and door way.

Sure don't. Plus if the landlord gives the thumbs up it doesn't matter to me because it will come out of my rent that I got to pay any how. So it's a wash for me. I am just wanting to make sure I am not getting taken... or that he isnt really because it will not effect me in the end either way.

Decent price. I paid a little over a grand for 320 feet, middle of the road carpet and the best pad. I'd say you are right in line!

Just thought of something. You may want to double check about the removal of the existing carpet and the prep for the new carpet. Removing staples and such. When we had our carpet installed the installers wanted to charge me for that. We worked it out, but just an FYI thing. One other thing you may want to do is disinfect/deodorize the sub floor after the old carpet is removed and then paint it with some kilz, pva primer or incorectly mixed paint from the hardware store (usually really cheap). that will help with keeping old stink from being reactivated if you spill water or something on your new carpet.

I went to Lowes today to look at some options. It looks like with pad installed it would be more. That amount I figured before was only for the carpet. It wasn't a ton more but it will be more either way.

My land lord didn't seem to interested in intertaining the idea of replacing the carpet, and he said he couldn't get time to do it him self for another 3 months. I am not waiting three months. He is coming over tonight (supposed to) to look at it. If we can't work something out, I will be moving. My wife will not even sleep in our own room because it stinks.

I will have to keep that paint thing in mind. I know that the 98 dollars installed for the whole house thing says in the fine print that it is only for installation and that, additional fees may apply. I didn't get to speak with anyone about these additional fees though. If they think they are going to charge me for removal they have another thing coming.

Whelp instead of trying to help fix the issue he attempted to make us be the problem. Didn't even entertain replacing the carpet because "he couldn't do it right now" Pointed out that my dog peed on one spot so I lifted the carpet to clean that area and that's when we noticed the rest of the carpet was horrendous.

So it looks like we will be looking for a new rent house soon.

Well, I understand that it's not an issue any more but I can pretty well guarantee that the $98 wasn't going to handle carpet removal or floor prep or tackless. We priced carpet recently and what I was told was that the $98 covered installation only in an already prepped house.

Good luck in your search for a new place.

Probably a better situation for you anyway. Seems like this guy doesn't deserve a conscientious tenant anyway. Sounds like he deserves what he will get.
