well im finished with week 1, ready for week 2 of my EMT-B refresher.

i actually learned something new, well a few things actually, been a lot of changes since i first took EMT-B classes.

i got to learn how to do an ET tube, (illegal for Basics to Intubate in Mich.), it is actually easier than i expected....at least on the dummy anyway.

i wonder why they are teaching basics how to intubate? i can see maybe allowing the combi tube, but whats next...IV's and drug therapy?

i think it has something to do with Basics being phased out.

they are slowly moving the basic to the Intermediate level and are gonna do away with the Basic level. so pretty soon it will be EMT-I and EMT-P.

at least that is what the experienced EMT's are telling me.

Brett, is this the infamous PARAGOD syndrome, , I am a basic and took what we call an "paramedic assist" class which gives us cerification to perform limited P- functions, tubing, spiking up bags yada yada yada.

no one in Georgia really hires EMT-B's anymore. They are pretty much phased out here. They only really teach the EMT-I class also. I guess you could test out in the middle of the class, but the practical test is actually harder with 8 skills tests I believe instead of 4 for EMT-I.

EMT-I's in GA can't intubate. combi tube's, iv's we can do. i just started my emt class its gonna be a long year.
we have a couple of emt-b's on our department but that is because one of them got his through nt'l guard and the other worked in alabama and crossed the border and got a job with us. to my knowledge they are not teaching a basic class in GA. its either I or P.

Having a great day a work today. On our 7th run since breakfast, all EMS runs except one BS gas leak. On the last came out as CPR in progress, well M-5 on location with CPR, we get there package pt, I est IV and get pt down to EMS unit. In the Medic unit I get the tube and send them on their way with two of the FF's off our truck with them. Long story short we get back from the run, I am doing the report since I did the Paramedic stuuf...thats what my Lt calls it....we get a call from the medic unti saying come back to ER Pt possible has Menigitis. 500mg Cipro later we are good to go. Stay safe 2night.

the big disease scare in the are that i am is Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA- Staph infections.

MRSA is an antibiotic resistant form of Staph infection. its has been around some of the local schools and have already taken some lives.
