Well it has been another few months, I figured I would update you all again. I know some people love to hear how they were right, or that their advice was taken. 
I posted this in the 3rd gen forum but I know that only a portion of the site goes in there.
*drum roll*......
Bought an '07 5.9L 2500 Mega Cab 4x4 last month.
I couldn't be happier with it. Well, except that the camper tops/toppers/shells cost about 3x what I thought they went for.

Well, I posted way back in 08 in this thread. I ended up with a fully loaded 08 Megacab and other than the emissions junk I absolutely loved it. It does take some getting used to having that short bed but you can always get one of those bed extenders where you put the tailgate down and fold it out. The interior room in the Mega is great. Throw a cap on it and you have almost what you would get with an Excursion or Suburban.

Ok ... I would advise you go with the Mega cab truck and a full shell. My 1/2 ton was set up that way and I LOVED IT (so did my dogs). Extended cab trucks are fine for kids ... my oldest son (21) was in ext cab Dodges most of his life. Mega cabs would be like riding in a Cadillac!!

Glad I helped in Dave's new vehicle dilema .... You'll really like it as we've discussed on Corral.
Now it's time to stock up on fuel filters, CI4 oil, gear oil when you catch it cheap, and fleetguard oil fiters.

I've been using an in-the-bed toolbox and a shell for several years.
It works well, and keeps your stuff secure and dry.
I keep a piece of carpet in the bed to help with my old man knees when I need to crawl in to get something of of the toolbox.

Yep, decided I'm going to have to get an in-bed toolbox as well. Haven't decided which one yet. Not sure if I want to drop the coin on a Weatherguard if it's going to be under a cap most of the time.

I found mine on Craigslist........ $25 
Rail high, single lid, diamonette aluminum, fits across the bed, anchored via "J" bolts that slip into the tie down pockets at the bottom front of the bed.

What! What'd I do!
I was thinking of mounting 4x4s (or something) on the floor on either side of the bed, and mounting the toolbox up off that so I can still slide stuff under it.

Thanks for posting up the latest pic, I've been looking at campershells for my '08 since it's our travel truck and tow rig. We make trips every summer and having a way to keep our stuff secured, safe, and dry has been a priority but not being home to window shop makes that pretty difficult.
(Now we just need to get you some train horns on there and you'll be set!)

Why don't you look at a bedslide tool box? It fits tween the wheelwells and is as long as the bed (kinda acts as the floor). You lower tailgate and the whole thing is a drawer that slides out onto the tailgate. I have em in my service vans at work and they are awesome. Put some carpet on the top of it and it you are set to camp if you need to with an air mattress on top. Very tough too because I hav had 50 ton a/c compressors on top of it and it didn't even bow it any.
