Holy Crap! MINUS 41 DEGREES!!
Re:Holy Crap! MINUS 41 DEGREES!!
I dont mean for this to shift the focus of this thread, but I have a question for all who live in extreme cold climates:
We can plug our trucks in to help them start. We can leave the truck in "N" (autos) to help warm up the tranny, but my question is:
What about the gear oil in the differencials and the manual tranny's?
In temps this cold, the diff fluid must turn to a solid? Doesnt it?
I would think driving any vehicle in temps like that would leave the axles without lubircaton?
Am I missing something here?
Rich

I don't know, i'm no oil expert... ;D
[/quote]

I dont know either. I always saw diff fluis as being really thick. Im guessing that it would not tollerate the cold temps very well.
Maybe Im wrong... thats why I asked ???

Rich

But you'll have to drive up here to get it :P

Now onto the diffs/tranny. The fluid does get pretty frosty up here, but will still run and lubricate. After a couple miles, things will heat up and everything is cool (er, warm) again. We generally take it _very_ easy on the trucks up here for the first few miles.

Of course, you have to make sure that your oil is not contaminated in any way, shape, or form, otherwise you'll have little ice cubes bouncing around in the diff. ;D

Rod

You can definately tell when things are as cold as they are right now. Yes the fluids get thicker and need to warm up too.
Just slow driving for the first little while will help heat things up and loosen it up too. Even the tires will have flat spots and ride rougher until they heat up from rolling.

The colder it gets the more care in warming up a vehicle you need to take.

I have seen some metals snap when its real cold.

:'(

Re:Holy Crap! MINUS 41 DEGREES!!
Temps here are supposed to get down to 25-35 degrees below zero. This is of course with the new way that they figure the wind chill.
If you figure it the old way that translates into -45 to -55 degrees
Now don't you feel so much warmer!
